95 Bayliner Cuddy with 120 Force - Shop just replaced my Throttle - Shifter. First trip out, the tilt trim works fine at the dock except I have to nudge the down button before it will go up - Bigger Problem, While underway the engine will tilt down but absolutely not Up tilt/trim while underway even if i do the down nudge then up thing - Where do I start looking to figure this problem out, BTW, it worked fine before the new throttle and shifter unit. Asked the mechanic at the shop and he just scratched his head, makes me a bit concerned about going back there.
Thanks

Re: No Up Tilt.Trim while underway

Sounds like a short at the shifter. Check wires to the tilt trim control for loose wires or any touching wires. Also check the oil in pump for thickness. Use a good marine grade tilt trim oil if you need to replace. Thick oil will make the pump work alot harder and real hard on cold days. Trimming motor can be difficult as well while at wot with to thick of oil in pump. Remember there is alot of pressure applied to the motor at wot so be patient with your trim. It will move slow and at times will trip your breaker.

It's summertime!!.The only way the oil would gum up is if it was 20deg.or it was cooked.
If it worked before then the problem is in the new shifter.Take it back to who put it in.

Profile? You might be close to someone who can help.J

Re: No Up Tilt.Trim while underway

first you need to determine if it is electric or hydraulic problem. If the motors spins but the unit does not lift then it is a hydraulic problem. If the motor does not spin then it is electric.

If it is a hydraulic problem then the mechanic had nothing to do with it. Just a coincidence.

If it is electric then you need to figure out if it is the switch, the relays, or the motor. I doubt it is the motor because trim would fail at dock too. I doubt it is circuit breaker because you didn't mention resetting it. So you are down to bad parts or wiring at either switch or relays. Bad wiring with intermittent failures can be hard to find. It can be a small wear spot anywhere on side of a 25' long cable. Rig up a VOM to read voltage on the blue/white control lead going into the relay harness. See if you get power to relay when trim fails. If you are getting power then relay needs replacing. They are less than $5 each. check iboats/ebay/amazon/google. If you are not getting power to relay then it is in your wiring. Redo VOM to measure switch output. If switch has good output then it is in the wires. If switch does not put out voltage then move VOM rig to the power feeding into switch.

Re: No Up Tilt.Trim while underway

When you say, no tilt during underway what speed are we talking about? Because mine does not tilt up either when underway above idle in forward. Which makes sense since the engine when pushing forward pushes against the little tilt hydo. Now of course it's a little different with the trim. You should have this even at WOT, albeit reacts slower due to the pressure of the engine pushing forward.

No tilt when underway, can you hear the tilt motor running and not lifting or is it not functioning at all?

Re: No Up Tilt.Trim while underway

Thanks for all the suggestions,
The fluid was not too cold as it was nearly a 100 temp and the water was in the midd-80's.
I know that technically there is a difference between tilt/trim, but I can never recall the difference, The engine would always tilt up to get on plane at WOT since the day I bought it until I got it back from the shop last weekend. As I said in the original posting, it was acting a little strange even at the dock or under idle as I would have to bump the down button to get the engine to go up, so I suspect its a wiring issue somewhere, I am going to take it out tomorrow and play with it some. I am hoping it is something simple as it has sat at the repair shop for a full month this summer already, I am concerned if I take it back it will be another 2-3 weeks to get it back,
Thanks
