Roboat,

These motors run quiet when in the water because the exhaust comes out through the prop. The water muffles the exhaust. When running on a motor flush, the prop is out of the water and it therefore much louder.

Thank you Mark

I am still curious as to why the 33 horse was so much quieter than the 50. Is there a different type of exhaust or do all come through the propeller?

Your 33hp won't have a thru hub exhaust. It exhausts out a port above the prop. Your newer 50hp likely exhaust through the center of the prop. Thru hubs are noisy simply because of the geometry...its shaped like a loud speaker and resonates.

Out of the water you hear a difference between them. I doubt you will hear much of a difference when they are submerged. Typically the small amount of exhaust exiting the ports higher on the mid-section is what you hear when submerged.

I run mine in plastic cans most of the time. My old 40 Lark had a pointy nose and didn't take long to poke a hole in the can. I leave the hose in the bucket when running.

You should come take a listen to my 89 Johnson 100GT. I've been using the scrap towel wrapped around the prop trick to try and quiet it down a little on the muffs. Thinking about getting that muffler I posted a picture of.
