i have an 87 19' with an omc 3.0. the engine & drive run fine. however when i reach planing speed & trim the lower unit up i am hearing a whining/ growling noise coming from the lower unit. when i trim it back down the noise goes away. i'm not trimming it up too far so that's not it. i changed the gimbal bearing yr. before last, so i don't suspect the bearing. i had the drive off this spring for maint. & the u joints were ok. also the boat does not reach the speeds that it once did. at 4000 rpm it will reach 30mph. with 3 on board, so i don't think weight of passengers is the problem. it doesn't need a tune up. i changed plugs, points etc. etc. last season. any ideas? thanx.

Do you notice if it makes this noise while turning as well. I'm not sure that your two problems are related. What is your normal mph at 4000 rpm. I have the same cobra and this sounds alot like gimbel or u-joints but you said you think they're ok. A leaky u-joint bellow will eat these up pretty fast. Just throwing out ideas. Good luck

it doesn't make any noise when turning. i did have water in the u- joint bellows last yr., had to replace it. if the engine was out of alignment could it cause this problem?

You said you had the drive off in the spring. I assume you checked for alignment then. very difficult to install drive if it was out if alignment. You said that the u-joints were fine but did you give them a really good check. Did you use any sealant around bellows when you installed new one. Did you install both o-rings on shaft when you put stern back.
