Re: Non counter rotating twin i/o's?

huh? What an interesting conversation.

So your all basically saying it's cheaper and some old drive systems (obsolete) you just can't find the right parts. I get that you use what you can.

Lets be honest if you think that docking a non counter rotating boat and a counter rotating boat are anything like the same you can't have experience with both. Right? Seriously how can you even say that? It might be ok and you might be used to it, but it's not as easy. One the props thrust like this ( ) and the other ) ) . It's an incredible advantage to have counter rotating.

bond-o I use aluminum props like most people around here because it's shallow and I'd rather chew up an aluminum then a stainless and maybe damage my motor. So they still have merit.

Mr 88 Disagree you may but facts are that when two props turn into each other make more thrust than if the don't, creating more speed, using less fuel per a given speed.

So DON'T buy one that's not counter rotating if it's that important, and DO buy one if you want to... DUH

Re: Non counter rotating twin i/o's?

Guys,

I do have a question, if one were to want to convert their boat into a counter rotating setup. Would it only be one drive unit that would need to be replaced or does this somehow follow the crankshafts as well in the engine which are reversed? Sorry I have not done much research on CR's and how they work-

It should be just one drive that needs replacing.

Although I only have experience with counter rotating motors (not drives but motors), like anything you make what you have work and get used to it. In the same regard you could argue why anyone would own a single engine boat, if the need for counter rotation is so needed.

Ayuh,.... Glad ya Completely Missed the Point......

I didn't miss your point at all!:rolleyes::facepalm:

I get it, you said it's cheaper so some people slap non counter rotating drives on there instead of replacing their broken drive with the right one. I kind of think we covered that though.

I don't use aluminum props because they are cheaper (my point which you missed) I and many people I know use them for a reason and that's all I meant by responding to you. Follow?

Seriously guys I'm trying to have an open conversation on a subject here.

If that is directed at me, You are all but calling me a liar....

AGAIN there IS indeed a slight advantage to have counter rotating drives on an I/O (possibly some hulls are affected more than others) but it is NOT a major advantage... I have operated C/R inboards and V-drives... I have not operated a twin engine I/O boat with C/R drives but what I said is that my twin engine boat (non C/R mercruiser alpha's) is equally easy to dock on either side and maneuvers very easily.....
The ONLY way that it could be any better is if the boat were to dock and tie itself up while I sat back and drank a cold one.

Who said anything about obsolete drives? Alpha's aren't obsolete and all the parts are readily available.

Craig, HAVE YOU ever operated a twin I/O boat without C/R drives or are you simply parroting hearsay?

When a fool hangs a chain this low, it's too hard not to pull... Glad you found the apostrophe key, and jerk? maybe, but you might want to read the quote below....

So true.

I'm just wondering how common it is and other than being cheap why someone would want to.

(of course we're leaving out real old classics (greenbush by the way that is one cool looking setup of those twins))

Seriously guy what's this time number three or four that you just decided you have to go out of your way to be a jerk?

Yes I've read my quote over and over it's a discussion, so seriously is it that important to you to post yet again on a thread for zero reason but to be a jerk?

Oh and you must be so smart to be able to pick out that I missed a key typing! It's just sad dude. So seriously you have nothing to say about the topic so why not just ignore it?

This is not a slight advantage or else by economics nobody would waste their money making them different.

Have I ever operated a twin i/o without? Nope never knew anybody with one. I've talked to some fish capt.'s around and neither have they or the guy at the local marina. Short of some nice antiques.

I keep hearing around here "Why would you do that?", cause it makes no sense to them either.

Oh and I was speaking in general to everybody not just you.

As for obsolete drives I was discussing everybody's setups not just yours, I know you can still buy Alpha's which just makes me wonder more why you don't buy one.

Ayuh,... You missed my point Completely,....

It ain't that Owner's are bein' Cheap, 'n buyin' the wrong drives...

It's Boat Manufacturer's who put the same drives on both sides, for Economics.....

So you are gathering ALL of your info from folks who DON'T KNOW and arguing with folks that DO KNOW.

There ya go.......

The NON CR is cheaper. It just plain works and works well. THAT is the REASON to run it .... the REASON to run C/R is that it is TECHNICALLY better and to some folks an extra thousand dollars is nothing. Heck some folks spend way more than that on fancy wheels for the boat trailer....

Re: Non counter rotating twin i/o's?

I can't believe that you bought a scape yard boat and slapped it together with whatever you could find and are acting like Wellcraft built your boat like that!

Who are the one's that don't know anything and who are the one's that do?

Is it the people who built your boat or the guy who slapped it back together with what he found?

Is it the licensed captains and certified mechanics or the back yard guy who doesn't think it matters?

Is it the manufacturers and the guys rigging them in the factories or the guy rigging his own under a tree?

I'm not sure what your area is like but around here boat builders are a major part of our economy. I'm surrounded by people who work for or have worked for them in the past.

So seriously if everyone I ask, and it's been a lot of people (it's been a running joke), and all of them say basically the same (in between laughing), so is it the factory trained people or the I know better then everybody else do-it-yourselfer that do know?

What manufacturers are your referring to that built a boat since I don't know lets just say 40 years ago, 1982 and on, that outfitted boats with non counter rotating twin drives?

You don't have to tell me that this thread is going crazy (I suprised right now that it's still open, but then that seems to some posters point huh?), but than that's not from me is it?

You've got one guy hell bent on proving himself right for doing things wrong and then another chiming in just to be rude like has on other threads.

This should be a real good discussion about a topic that would be real useful to people that join this forum looking to buy and/or rebuild a boat
