Noob owner needs guidance

Hi. In March 2012 I bought my first boat & motor. It's the hull only of a Yukon Delta (hope to use it for catching Asian Carp). It came with a motor that has been painted the same color as the boat. If someone has the time, would you please look at the pictures and tell me a little more about the motor?

Next time I get to where the boat is, I'll look for identification. Is there a thread on Iboats that tells you where to look for the ID numbers?

Thanks:)

Here's the link to the motor photos:

Ps. I'm new to boating & to this Forum. I'm having trouble navigating the forum, so if I don't reply... I'm most likely lost.

The ID no's should be on a plate rivited to the transom clamp.

May I ask, why do you want to catch Asian carp? Better the shoot them.

Ok, I have someone going there to get the ID number for me:)

I'm not going to be fishing, but I hope to get my son & a couple of his friends started.

Re: Noob owner needs guidance

I have the info about my motor now, if someone would please help me identify it:

model no 140743S

serial no J0004290

Many thanks!

Edit: The Model No. says it's a 1977, but the serial number isn't found on the charts I checked..
I must have the wrong serial number?

Thanks Molson. Yeah, I figured that much out. Maybe the Serial Number doesn't give much more info than that anyway.

I was curious about the Starflight decal... if that's the actual model I have & if anyone knows about the 1977 Starflight motors. I don't even know if the motor works. I'll have to hire someone locally to work on it & I'm afraid they may do damage to it:D I live pretty far from civilization, so finding a boat engine mechanic might be hard.

I'll keep lurking in threads, now that I have the model number.

Thanks for replyng:)

W/ model #, Evinrude, 1977 & 140hp OB, you can find detailed parts diagrams for your motor here

When you confirm all the details are correct & the pix match what your motor looks like (may have wrong clamp, so wrong info, wrong cowl, or powerhead swapped) if the PO hacked off some super structure & painted everything & motor that green color, theres' no telling what they might or might not have done to the motor.

You may have a hard time finding a mechanic to work on a 30+ yr old motor. Even if you approve expenses during his inspection & work on the motor, it will likely cost more then he'd ever be able to sell it for, if you decide it's ended up costing way more then you thought & never pick it up.

Ebay & other online retailers (Iboats for 1) sell service manuals, you might want to pick 1 of those up too.

Re: Noob owner needs guidance

Thanks JB. I'm in over my head with the motor. Might have to save up for a newer one. I'm hoping I can build the cabin for my boat (hull), but I know I can't do anything with motors. I bought the hull (paid too much), because it was big enough to harvest large amounts of carp (Illinois has a big problem with Asian carp), but I recently decided to scrap the whole commercial fishing idea. Not enough startup capital.

Since buying the hull last Feb. or March, I've been reading up in boating forums about restorations & boat building. Once I read about the Lisa B. Good shanty boat design, I knew it was possible for me to have a houseboat. I was inspired when reading about the Lisa B. Good. The designer explained that you can 'make do.' Using a Coleman stove, a cooler, etc. That plan won't work with my hull, but I hope to find one that will.

I have 5 kids & 7 grandkids & want to be able to take them on the rivers someday. At least the tributaries of the Mississippi & Ohio. People around here have said I better stay off the main channels, because I'm inexperienced.

I'm giving you more background info, since you've helped direct me to the proper threads twice now. I appreciate the help.

Yes, the carp, the jumpers right, are a problem. I can't remember the invasive species but at least 1 has made it up the rivers & streams into the GreatLakes and the local DNR's had started a program of elimination that was affecting native fish too....

I grew up driving north & south across the Tenn border w/ KY seeral times a year, and can remember noticing that the Kudzu got worse every year until in some places it seemed to be the only roadside growth:facepalm:

Best intentions, poor results.

Best of luck getting into a big enough boat soon. Might want to look into a tin boat: pontoon or houseboat. Find someplace 'close', say under a 100mi & watch for salvage~insurance stuff. I don't know what Illinois regs are, but in WV, as long as you follow the rules & submit the right forms, you can reg & title an assembled boat/trailer w/out too much trouble.... And that includes salvage...

A bare empty shell/hull that you might get to build out as you can afford too. And as tin/aluminum it wouldn't be a total wreck after salvage or insurance write-off. Nor will it continue to get worse as you build it out.

Re: Noob owner needs guidance

I didn't even think about the regulations;) Guess I better make some phone calls tomorrow.

I put the hull up for sale, because A) I gave up on the fishing idea and B) I found my same boat WITH the cabin in decent shape for just $1000 more than the $2K I paid for my hull. I know. I paid too much:) Live & learn. It did include the trailer and motor << that I probably won't be able to use;)

Anyway, the only replies on craigslist were from ppl saying they'd be putting certified checks in my bank account. Good thing craigslist has all kinds of warnings about that!

I gotta build a cabin on my hull. I can't afford another boat.

Hey, lucky me, I won the Liberian lottery I didn't even enter! I'll send you a fat wad of 20's in the am! Ok.... They'll be in a plain brown wrapper that has DOES NOT CONTAIN CASH stamped all over it:eek:

Well, all I can say is make sure to plan a light weight & sturdy structure..... Usually an either or, not a both... But a 25X8 hull is fairly huge...

I don't like getting those craigslist scam emails. Makes me think my computer is going to get a virus or something;)

Ok, think light with the cabin. I've looked at dozens of cabin designs & I'm deciding the layout I want. Now I'm thinking about materials & ways to cut costs. Gotta keep thinking "shanty boat" so I don't get excited about finished projects I see that I could never afford. There are 2 Yukon Delta houseboat restorations online that I love. Here's the less expensive project (still way out of my budget): http://www.mainstreet-hosting.com/YukonDelta/

And this one has over $100K put into it: http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/09/projects/houseboat/index.htm << That one has a video of the restoration on youtube & in the comments it says they put $180K in it. Seems high, but maybe. Idk.

Here's the writing that inspired me: http://www.duckworksbbs.com/plans/browne/lisa-b-good/index.htm << The designer passed away, I read. I like how he explained the importance of keeping it simple.
