Noodling is the term used for the method of catching big cats by hand in the river. Check it out. I thinks flathead will stick with rod and reel. These guys are nuts!!!

I'll bet they put up a good fight...look at the size of them ! (Probably looks similar to wrestling with a crocodile...)

I have never went to noodle fish.
I always noodled turtle, but have came up with some shovelheads(thats what their called here) while doing it.

Mostly small ones though.

Now I have caught some nice flatheads at Sam Rayburn before and at a local paylake here at home.

Re: noodling.

I've done this quite a few times. Lots of fun. Usually for small cyprinid though, nothing like this. On a good day I can get 30 to 60 of them.

Also got a white sucker (12") out of the stream when I was young and dumb enough to stand in the cold water during spawning run.

Oh yea, best place to catch cyprinid like this is in one of those plastic buckets that says Plano on it.

roscoe... whats a cyprinid, You could catch every northern under 4lbs that spawn in the stream on my place if you wanted, over that size and they come past to fast to get a hold on. not to many over 6lbs come up though.

Re: noodling.

We've got a few guys around here who do that and they all have scars on their arms to prove it. According to them, the idea is to have the big cat sort of swallow your arm so you can hold on and pull him out. As for me, I wouldn't be feeling around under cut banks for any reason. Afraid I'd grab a water mocccasin, an alligator or a snapping turtle.

Re: noodling.

Sorry about that Neumanns. A cyprinid, is a minnow. But minnow doesn't sound very macho. :)

I catch 'em up out of that yellow bucket in my boat and put them on a hook to catch crappies and walleye. I always catch more minnows than walleyes.

Re: noodling.

Yea Jack, they have to get a good hold on them so they stick there arm in far enough to get to the gill plates and sometimes reach through the gills.

Flatheads don't have much jaw pressure like Bluecats do so you don't have to worry about that so much, but they have a bunch of tiny teeth and they love to shake back and forth and this is what will cause scars on one's arm.

I love shovelheads. :D

edit: And yes you grab a hold of everything when noodling.
I love it when you grab something you don't want and throw it to the person holding the bag. :D

SBN, Looks like a jet ski trailer would be perfect to use to haul one of those giants home.! It would freak people out to see that rig going down the road. Wow, a redneck jet ski!
