Im sorry for a long post. I was just typing all this and hit a wrong button and lost it all so ill retype it. I have a 50 horsepower force outboard. I changed the impellar and thremostat about a year or two ago. i then ran into starter trouble and began rebuilding my boat. I finally got a new starter and was almost finished with my build. I cleaned the carb today and went to the lake to sync the carb. The motor was peeing really good stream but it was hot to the touch but not hot enough that i couldnt hold my hand under the stream. Adding fuel to the fire but it wouldnt go into forward gear but would go into reverse. What do i need to do now?

Re: not a good day

It was recommended to me to get an Infrared Temp Gauge (picked up at Harbor Freight for $39.00) and shoot accurate temps to make sure it's getting "hot". If so, then it's time to rethink the impellar. Down here, we have to change them annually, so 2 years isn't unheard of. As for the shifting, if it's even close to my old Chrysler 50 then your issue is probably in the linkage, under the hood. It has an adjustment, so see if that's causing the problem. As for the "hot to touch", did the motor run long enough for the thermostats to open up? The water will probably be warmer before they do. Temp gauge will remove any doubt, that's for sure. Maybe you'll get lucky like me and realize you're just "over-thinking things".

I have thought about the infrared temp guage and it only ran at idle and for a few minutes at a time. It might not have run long enough for the thermostat to open. This is the first time it has run with a thermostat.

Haymon, are you running the engine in a tank? My 50 hp runs hotter in the tank. Test it in the lake. Also, like Emomey said, the problem is most likely a linkage adjustment. Easy to do. Remove the upper covers on the leg and you'll see the linkage. Make adjustments until you get it right. Make sure the cable connections on the motor haven't worked loose. Good luck.

You probably didn't get the lower unit and the shift linkage into the same gear, when you put the lower unit back on.

Please always give the year of the motor, as they were changed several times in a 15 year time span.
