not dying when plug off johnson 20

i had taken plug off top cylinder it wanted to die<took it off bottom nothin happened,but there was plenty of spark going from plug wire to plug,when i had it off.just got into boating so im nt familiar.some say coil is bad and others say ok.??

What motor are we talking about here? Model number or year? You check compression?

Bottom cylinder is dead.

1985 j20crcos. would it be dead cause of coil? even with the spark coming from it.

Start with checking compression. If you got spark, I doubt that it would be a bad coil.

Did you try pulling the plug immediately after to see if it was wet with fuel? Might be getting spark, but no fuel.

no i didnt check right after bt i noticed before it is wet .unlike top one it was dry..i will recheck in morning to be sure.i hv tested the fuel pump twice and it seems to be running fine.just incase u asked.lol

swap plugs upper to lower,,maybe a plug problem. that might tell you pretty quick. if problem switches cylinders.

ok did that didnt work.changed wires on coil that didnt work either.wouldnt start when wires switched.

as High Trim suggested....a compression test is in order first...then on to the ignition side....start with compression as no amount of swappin' an prayin' will help w/o sufficent compression
