I have just changed the impeller on my Mercury 60hp, 1991. After putting the lower case back on there is now no "clunk" like there usually is when the throttle is moved into forward or reverse. I fear the spline that moves the gears to give forward, reverse and neutral has moved. I took the lower case off while the control lever was in neutral. Someone just told me maybe it should have been in gear first?.
I have taken the lower case off again amd can get reverse by turning the spline a fair way round to the right. The case was oringinally very hard to get the last inch on.
I am at a loss now on what to do, any advise we be very welcome.
sincerely Steve

Re: not engaging reverse

Put the throttle and gearcase both in neutral and try agian. I like to put them up in neutral as there is a definate "snick" to define the presise spot.

-W
