Re: Not enough power from my 4.3L Mercrusier

Tried to take the boat to the lake this weekend to get the RPM at WOT, as requested. Didn't happen. This was the first time I didn't do a test start at home with the ears and it bit me in the rear. Dead battery. Took the boat all the way back home. Went and bought a new battery and added a switch to the negative side of the battery. Hopefully I can get the RPM at WOT soon. Sounds like a four blade prop with a 19 pitch is the way to go. Guess it is almost time to do some shoping for a prop, I assume online prices will beat the in store prices.

So nobody's mentioned this but that boat is the smallest, lightest one that year. It is only 2000lbs. I'm struggling to see how even the 23" can't get you up and honestly how it only goes 50mph. My 18 footer is a thousand lbs heavier dry with 33 gallons of gas so is a slow boat and with a 21" alum prop will go 51.2mph on gps and rip your arms out pulling me up salalom deep water start with the same 4.3 liter and three aboard. I also weigh 175. You shouldn't "need" a 19" and even your 23" should be acceptable. There has to be more going on here. If my boat weighed a thousand lbs less, it would need something to keep it from flying away. Thats five two hundred lb people difference in just build weight not taking into account the larger gas tank. I know many, many a light bowrider owner pulling up deep with 23" props and 4.3 liter engines.

Hi, I would recommend trying a Turning Point Hustler 4 blade prop in a 21 pitch, same diameter or as close to possible as your current prop. I recently switched to it from the original 21 pitch merc 3 blade.

If you run much like we do, you spend most of your time pulling skiers and cruising, so dropping a couple MPH won't bother you. You can pick up the TP prop for @140 including the hub from most places. Think they sell them on here as well. The prop itself is right at 100, so if you try the 21, then want to go even lower, you can pick up another and keep the 21 as a spare.
