So this is an additional thread from a outboard johnson thread. My boat is having trouble planing out with more then two ppl on it. I realize the there are many underlying issues that I need to take care of.

What I want to know is, if I want an over heavy boat to move faster and plane out, what should I do to the pitch of my prop? I am currently pushing a 17ft 1976 fiberglass searay with 3 ppl at 13-15mph and at 2200rpm. After 15min or so I can get it to jump to 25mph and 4200rpm.

Thanks

Jason

What do you mean after 15 mins? All of a sudden the motor picks up and finally moves a little? If thats the case id say you have bigger problems than the prop. Also what size prop are you running now and how many blades on it? As for your pitch question what ive learned here is that going up in pitch brings down your rpms and going down is the opposite. I am no expert at all just trying to help.

Not nearly enough information to diagnose. Tell about your motor- what are you using to power this 17' fiberglass Searay? Can you read your capacity plate- what HP is the boat rated for vs what size motor you're running? Do you know what the configuration of your existing prop is? IE 3 blade Aluminum 14" diameter, 17" pitch, etc....... More information you can provide, better chance of getting help.

Ayuh,.... They're Opposites,.... If ya need more power to plane out, ya drop pitch,...

If ya wanta go Faster,... Ya need more pitch, 'n the Horsepower to spin it...

And changing props does not solve the problem if the engine is not in good health. It takes power to spin a prop.

Engine is in great health. Just cleaned and tuned. Its the boat. I think previous owner re fiber glassed the boat. There is an extra layer of floor. Point is the boat is much heavier then it is supposed to be. As for the 15min, after 15 minutes it seems to drop just enough gas weight to get it planed out and almost instantly picks up speed going from 15mph to 25mph within a few seconds.

Re: not going fast with ppl on my boat.

Your prop size will be near the base of the blades or under your prop nut. written _ _ X _ _ ( diameter X pitch)
Pitch is the key number usually the diameter just follows the application. You may note that generally as pitch goes up diameter goes down.Your description sounds like you could be missing a cylinder that eventually cuts in.

Still need your details. Answer the questions in the stickys at the top of the prop forum.Without the info we,re in a big dark room with no light.
Usually to rebuild the floor would be removed and any repairs done and floor put back.Chances are if the floor needed replacement other work needed to be done.Usually there is foam under the floor that very likely was saturated with water. If they just put a floor over the old one all that wet foam may still be there. And it will slow hole shot and performance I'm still working in the dark though.
