Not pumping water

The 1983 60hp that I recently bought is not pumping any water at all. While on muffs I pulled the hose from the tell tale and get no water. Same at the prop or from the exhaust ports.

Pulled the lower off this morning and found that 2 of the vains on the impeller were facing the wrong direction. Is this enough to keep it from pumping or do I need to look further? Thought about blowing air into the water tube and see if I get air from the tell tale hose fitting. Asking because I don't want to change the impeller and put it back together only to find I'm still not pumping water.

Have to see if I can locate a pump kit tomorrow locally after I get home from work, the one place I usually frequent for parts is flooded out and can't get to it!

Forget blowing air - well you could try it but doubt that it will tell you much. The thermostats will pretty much block passage of anything.

Put a new impeller in her, put on the muffs & fire it up.

Re: Not pumping water

Sorry, it's new to me but it hasn't been sitting.

From what I was told this impellar was just put in last summer and was only used a few times before the engine was removed from the boat because theis engine was just too heavy for the 13' race boat he bought it for. Was also told that it didn't pump well on muffs but didn't run hot either.

What would cause the 2 viens to face the wrong direction other than who ever did the work didn't do it correctly? Which brings me back to if the water pump repair doesn't correct this what do I look at next?

The vanes should only get backwards if installed wrong. Replacing the impellar or a pump O/H kit is a must. Also ensure there is no blockage in or out.

If your not getting any water to come out anywhere then buy a new water pump kit. I have dealt with a couple outboards in the past that wouldn't pump water even though the impellers looked fine. After installing a new impeller they pumped water fine.

Or, you can put everything back correctly and use a large tub to test it in since some outboards don't like to pump water on muffs.
When you have the LU dropped you should be able to use a jet type nozzle on the end of your hose and then stick it in the water tube and water should shoot out the tell tail.

You said "From what I was told this impellar was just put in last summer and was only used a few times before the engine was removed - - - " I guarantee that engine was not used a few times. Remember this as Greg House says on the TV program House - "Everybody lies - - ".

Follow Whoops advice -

Re: Not pumping water

Thanks everyone.

Spent a couple hours yesterday running down a new impeller and an added hour BSing with the marina owner. Nice ol guy that's been there sense 1959!

Got the parts and installed the pump kit, reassembled and everything is now as it should be! Yes I was in fear that there was also a blockage but that fear was unfounded!

Solittle, yes I am normally a non-believer in what people tell me about stuff they are trying to sell. But not in this case. This seller was very up-front about the condition and use of this engine. The impeller I took out looks brand new and has not even taken a set yet. The boat that it was used on the seller still has in his garage along with a very nice 20' Mirage pickle fork with a modified 200hp V6 Evinrude.

So maybe I was unclear in my statement. What I was implying was that this engine was only used a few times by him after the work he had done to it. Which included going through the lower unit, rebuilding carbs, replacing all the fuel lines and replacing the water pump.
