not run for two years

A friend has asked for my help in getting his Mercury outboard started. It has been sitting in storage for two years, but ran fine before that. Still has the old fuel sitting in it too - wasn't properly prepared for storage in the garage. The Merc's an older model number 1035504, thirty five horse unit. He tried to start it last year, but no luck. Any hints for cleaning out the fuel system/carb? I would guess that the old fuel has it at least partially clogged. Also, the unit has an "auto-blend" oiler, that I assume, like many older two strokes, blends the injector oil and the fuel to avoid the need to premix at the fuel tank. I've heard that its best to disable these types of fuel mixers in other types of two stroke engines and just premix the fuel at the gas tank. Is this true here? Supposedly these oil injectors fail all the time and leave people with damaged engines. What do you think? Greatly appreciate all of the help!

Howdy Oldster.

Welcome to iboats. :)

First step is a Repair Manual.

Clean carbs and fuel pump. Overhaul if needed.
Replace water pump impeller.

Then go to the Engine FAQ section and do any required troubleshooting in the "Outboard wont start" topic.

Good luck, and let us know what you find. :)

In the case of this engine I would replace the fuel pump diaphams automaticly and the water pump impeller and use can of "Engine Tune" from Merc when ya git it runin' in addditon to what JB says...

oldster

In addition to JB good advice(As Always), I would put a little TCW-3 oil in each cylinder to lube then up a bit before cranking it over. As said, Clean the carbs and use rebuild kits on them. Use carb cleaner and compressed air to blow out the passages. Set the floats. Remove and replace lower unit fluid, checking it as you go. Put new seals on the screws. After you get it running, decarb the motor. You can find out how to do this in the "frequently asked questions" section on this forum. As a general rule, Merc injection pumps are good. But I would still be leary of one that sat for 2 years. Seals get brittle and go bad and so forth. Best to pre-mix your fuel until it's verified that the injection system is working. Do this at a 50:1 mix. Let us know how you progress...
