Not topping out

Yeehaw! Got my shop manual today. Replaced fuel line from pump to carb (it was wet with fuel around the end at carb) and main fuel line to filter (it was cracked at the filter end). Gonna run it on 50:1 instead of 40:1 tomorrow. What can I say about the mix? One of those stupid human things. However..now that I have the shop manual.....

I'm sure it needs decarbed pretty bad since it set up for 3 years and was probably not ever done by previous owner. That will be next along with checking the fuel pump output.

Already pulled and cleaned carbs. They were amazingly clean. Plugs didn't look too bad. Thinking I'll wait till I decarb before putting new plugs in. Throttle cable and associated assemblies seem to be functioning corectly. (Haven't verified finer details of choke yet other than does it choke to start and open up when not required to start? Yes.)

Any other simple things I might consider before working back up to the carbs?
The motor is a 1972 65hp Evinrude.

No need to jump in and do everything at once. Enjoying tinkering and testing. My definition of testing is "Let's go fishing and see how it runs now".

Trouble shooting up to this point has been: Does it start? Yes. Does it float? Yes. Does it move forward? Yes. Take it fishing? YES! Can we get back home with it? Don't know, not done fishing yet. Will the motor shut down if you use all the fuel out of the tank? Yes. (This is where I'd insert the 'redface' icon if I knew how.)

Re: Not topping out

Very good point! Been there, done that. It had a new impeller installed before I bought it. Checked it with a muff and again on the lake first time I went out. Like Reagan used to say "Trust everyone, verify everything."

Did run into a snag this time out though and I'm thoroughly lost and confused. Fuel pump quit. Took it apart, without loosing anything this time! Bottom quarter of one of the 'flappers' (check valve?) seems to be corroded away. Now it will only run if I hand feed it with the primer bulb.

Looked at a lot of drawings and they all show the square style fuel pump. The one on my motor has the triangular top. I'm guessing maybe someone upgraded the fuel pump. I can't find a rebuild kit that has the little flappers in it. My Clymers manual shows the triangular top fuel pump and tells me how to replace the entire pump but no further help. Did some cruising around the internet and I wasn't able to find the correct hp rated rebuild kit.

Questions: What's the latest model fuel pump I can install so I can maintain it? If the one on it is the latest model how can I get a rebuild kit that has the parts I need?

Motor info: Model 65 2 73S
Which I understand is a 1972 65hp Evinrude Triumph. I thought it was a '73 till I looked up the model number and it shows up as a '72. I just thought I was confused...now I know I am.

Bird hunting season opens in a few weeks and my freezer doesn't have enough fish to get me through winter. Starting to feel a little panic set in.

Ah - Go to your nearest BRP dealer with the motor model #. He should either have it or can get it.

Re: Not topping out

I'm so far into nowhere the dealer search couldn't find me! Which is OK, there's three nice lakes within 30 minutes of my shack. I did however use BRP drawings to figure out which fuel pump I need and got it ordered. Couldn't locate a matching rebuild kit so I went for the correct pump. Still haven't a clue what pump is on my motor though.

Thanks for the BRP tip Solittle! And thanks for the redirect back to the FAQ tashasdady! I'd already read through it but missed some points.
