So, I didn’t do a thing last winter, I’ll be honest, moved and got busy but chanced it. I think I’m screwed?

2010 mercruiser 3.0 TKS. Started it today, started right up, then........ crappy sludge pouring out of carb, pulled dipstick, just water and oil gushing out.

seems to be a cracked block. Am I gonna need a full long block replacement? Fairly certain I will, any suggestions, criticism and general callIng me a dumb ass is welcome!

I'm in the same boat friend (I winterized, but didn't do a good job with my new boat).... I see a new longblock in your future. Sorry... I know that sucks.

Welcome aboard.

That is an expensive lesson to learn.

You didnt say what boat, however may be a good opportunity to upgrade to a 4.3

Well, I guess I’ll just have to believe my local licensed mercruiser service center! They’re checking the top of the block between the 2/3 cylinder for a crack, which they say they can slot and fill.

Update:

yea freeze damage, cylinder head cracked and now replaced. Tech is gonna put it in the water today.

Apparently between not winterizing, and hours idling at the beach, tech said I had about a pound of sand in the head. So, he replaced my pump impeller as well just to be sure it’s in good shape.

Total cost will be around $900, expensive, but cheaper than a new long block.

go out and buy a lottery ticket. usually when the head goes, the block and manifold long since failed.

Yeah, I got pooped a golden egg this time. As I said, he’s gonna take it to the lake today and put some pressure on it to verify it was just the head, but said he could find NO crack in the block.

I love it. Don't count that chicken when it is still an egg. Wish you best of luck on it though.

Looks like you dodged a major bullet! Congratulations on your luck, but don't try it again ... winterize or heated storage or both!

some years ago i bought a boat with a volvo 3.0 and freeze damage for cheap . i budgeted for a new engine but it turned out only the t-stat housing and the manifold were cracked . after replacing this the engine was a good runner until i sold the boat .

it appears the good old 3.0 gives you a slight chance of survival , amazing . i have good memeries to the 3.0 !

Tech said it’s called the iron duke, and generally indestructible (unless you’re a jackass like I am).

looking forward to getting on plane again!

iron duke was pontiac , this is a industrial 3.0 they use for mercruiser, i personally think its better since the iron duke was a small displacement :)

To fill the head means you filled the block first
