I have just purchased a 1975 MFG Carefree 14. Boat came from the factory with a very simple dashboard. All thats there is a ignition key switch, and a starter button. That being said can i install any insturments such as a tach and speedo? Boat has a 35 horse evinrude, two cycle OB. Fuel guage? Engine Temp? Thanks in advance Mitch

You can buy nice gauge sets right here on Iboats. The speedo is Generic and runs off a pito tube, the tach and volt meter are motor specific. When ordering, it will ask you for your motor type. You may also need a tach wire harnesskit, that runs from a plug on your shift control. Here is a nice set, the same as I purchased. http://www.iboats.com/Sahara-4-Gaug...8901821--**********.088306733--view_id.169282

Re: O/B motor insturments

You really don't need a trim gauge since you can turn your head and see where the engine is. I personally feel there are two gauges that are most overlooked -- those being water pressure and temperature. Temperature gauges seem to give folks the most grief however in that they install the wrong type. Do not buy a gauge that has the lowest number 100 degrees or higher. Chances are gauge will not likely read higher than that. Gauges are available that start at 60 degrees but you really have to look for them. Water pressure gauges do not require a sender. The idea that just because you have water pressure is a guarantee that the engine is cooling properly is not a valid assumption. While true that without water pressure the engine will overheat, fact is, a good number of overheat scenarios are not due to water pressure. A voltmeter is not engine specific and in fact doesn't even connect to the engine. It monitors charging system (battery) voltage and therefore tells you if the charging system is working.
