O-ring instalment on gas connector for a 1954 Johnson tank

The local dealer gave me the proper o-rings "from the johnson book" that go in to the gas connector for my 1954 Sea Horse Johnson 5.5hp motor. But I can make them sit in the holes properly. I don't think their the right ones but the dealer assures me that they are. The bottom line is that it leaks gas and I can't use the motor. :( They want $65 for the hole connector. Any trick to put these things in place? I tried to take the connector apart but it doesn't look like anything can come apart...

Are the old rings completely out? The replacements should fit in the same slots vacated by the old rings.

Ya. I took the old ones out...(I used a baby pin) They are really tight in there and the hole is very small...So I put the new ones back in there(very easy to put them in)but they just don't sit like the old one did...It's almost like there's a groove that the o-ring would need to push pushed back on but it's impossible to push it don't any further....I looked at the old one and the new one and they look a little different but maybe it's because of the old one having ware on them....The dealer keeps saying that the ones I have are the right ones but for some reason, I don't think they are. That's why I'm wondering if there is maybe a trick to get them in in place...I put the old one back in to see if what happened and they sit ok...But again, it might be because they already have the form to go around...

Decided to buy the Connector....$65 Canadian...It's back order. Won't be able to use the motor for at least 2 weeks... I hope to start fishing before summer end.....

Word of advised to all rookies out there....DON'T BUY A 1950's MOTOR. It's not worth all the trouble and money you'll dish out if you run it to problems. Pay a little extra and get something from the present era.... ;)

Look back to earlier posts, there has been discussions on how to convert the old style connector to the newer style.

Just to let you know. I contacted Twin City Outboards, they sell rebuilt connectors for about $18 (US) plus the exchange of your old one. It may be something to think about.

My local dealer wanted something like $56 (US) for a new one.

sorry for not getting back to you, although I don't think I have a solution. If you can get the O-rings in the slots, maybe you can carefully force them down further with the blade of a small screwdriver. I guess I'm not completetly sure of the problem -- could be that the new O-rings are making it more difficult to seat the connector (i.e., to connect the fuel line to the motor), and that is what is creating problems for you.

These are nice motors, and fairly simple to maintain. But I'm not sure they are right for users who absolutely don't like some tinkering. I always recommend against buying an antique motor (at least with the idea of using it) if the sole reason is that the buyer has happened to find one that is cheaper than a newer model. It's possible, though, that you will really like the motor once the early frustration is past. (If you spent a little more than you might have for the connector, don't worry about it. You will make that up on the next fix you are able to do yourself -- Change the lower unit oil and replace the impeller once yourself, if you haven't done so already, and you will have saved a couple hundred dollars over shop rates.)

Thanks everyone...I double checked your numbers seahorse and the dealer gave me the right ones...So anyway, it must be something wrong with the connector itself or something...Anyhow, I found a connector at a local dealer (specializing in antique motors) and I bought it for $66 canadian. So this weekend it's trial time....Crossing fingers and other part of my body... ;)
