occasionally floods

I have a 76 75 hp johnson. It idles fine and runs great but occasionally after running to a place to fish and setting there a while it will backfire and then appears to be flooded. I will have to turn it over quite a while before it starts. Most of the time it starts right up. Any ideas what could be happening?

Re: occasionally floods

Its a fuel problem. Check to make sure the carbs are clean, then check the high speed jets. Do you come off the throttle quick? If so, it most likely is dumping alot of fuel before it slows down, then its trying to catch up to itself while it sits there. Something is sticking or plugged. Check your float bowls first. That is most likely the culprit.
