Odd question....shipyard related

a coworker of mine is trying to finish up a report and we're having trouble figuring out what to call something.

basically the way he said it to me is at the larger shipyard terminals by the waterfront there will be recessed areas with hinged lids on top that you can open and then have access to the water supply hydrant used to fill up the ship's holding tanks with water.

he is trying to figure out what the term for this space is and he doesnt want to use terms like "box" or "cavity". I'm sure there's a technical term for it but we are at a loss.

the picture he drew for me shows them in sets of 3 if that helps??

just because of who will see this report he doesnt want to use those terms as its mainly just a hole in the concrete that contains the water hydrant and has two big metal hinged doors on top of it.

he's leaning towards "enclosure" but still kinda waivering as he's sure there's some sort of technical term for it. I mean they have to order its contruction under some sort of nominclature I would assume? I tried looking around online but all I see are the surface mounted water supplies you see at normal boat marinas haha.

Underground equipment shelters are commonly called VAULTS.

A "void". I work in a shipyard repairing barges, and any such enclosure you have mentioned is referred to as a void, or a confined space, which it is. There is a whole procedure to follow to enter confined spaces.

In generic water holding terms, such a thing would also be called a cistern.

I think that would be if it held water; this holds a hydrant but being under the cover and in a void/vault, is not exposed or in the way. Hopefully it won't hold water!

We call them temporary service connections at my yard. weather(sp) it`s water, elec, compressed air....
