I have an 2000 135 Optimax (200hrs). I would like to switch to full synthetic for motor injection oil AND synthetic lower unit this week as I winterize..

Does Mercury make 100% synthetic products for both applications ?
Anyone have any issue/problems switchitching to synthetics ?
thanks for the advice... Billfo

I'm sure to get flamed for saying this, but to me, full synthetic is a huge waste of money. I tend to change my oil more than once a year. But that's just me.

Hi,

I run 2 of my 15 engines on full synthetic top and bottom.
One is a pontoon and the other a bass boat.

I did alot of reading after I bought my last Harley.. I was amazed at all that I did not know about oil.. Go to a site that specializes in oil, do some reading..
I don't think its a "yes" or "no" question, but I run ful syn in everything I own.
This site has links to everything you will ever want to read about oil..

Mercury Hi-performance LU lube is a full synthetic product. It's one of the best LU lubes you can get. Be sure all the standard lube is drained out (overnight) before you add the green stuff.

Mercury has a special synth-blend for the Optimax engine. It isn't exactly TCW-3 oil, and interchanging it with TCW-3 isn't recommended either way. I'd stick with the recommended oil.

hope it helps

No worries.... I went thru this battle when I used Amsoil in my Goldwing.. The guy that bought the Wing, changed the fresh Amsoil -oil before he drove the bike home. He didnt believe in it ! To each his own..
----------------
I used a full synthetic in my Evinrude 150 Ficht "oil injection reservoir" AND lower unit.- "I" THOUGHT it ran quieter & didnt smell at all..;) But with the older 200 hr Mercury 135, I guess I was asking if it would be OK to change to synthetic now..

Thanks for all the replies...

AmZoil is good synthetic oil. It just isn't three times as good as the Wally World synthetic. In fact, I think it's about the same except 3 times the price.

Just be careful with the Opitpops... They are not oil injected, just petrol injected. The oil is still sucked through the crankcase before entering the cylinders in the same manner as a normal 2 stroke. The petrol is injected directly into the combustion chamber. Don't confused fuel injection with Direct injection.

Honestly, I was not aware of that. I thought they were oil injected too!
Im using the Optimax oil synthetic (or blend) in my boat.. We just got sidetracked with the mc oil conversation..

The oil (without any petrol with it) is 'injected' into an air intake manifold before being sucked past reeds and into the crankcase, just like a standard 2 stroke, but it's NOT the same as a standard 2 stroke, injected or otherwise. Standard 2 strokes mix petrol with the oil either before the carb (American engines and Suzuki) or in the intake manifold (Yap engines, except Suzi). In Optis the petrol is fired directly into the cylinder and never sees the crankcase.

If you're using the recommended oil you shouldn't have any problems.
