Oh crap.... found a carb jet under the carpet of my boat

I've got an 1988 (edited from earlier post of 89) Force 85hp motor on my fishing boat. I mostly use it at slow speeds, trolling and the like.

It does exhibit rough throttle up when I get on the gas. I boat at 5000' elevation.

I bought this boat used. I had wondered if they had messed with the carbs at all.

The other day, I found a used carb jet under the carpet, in a small ziplock baggie, and now I am a bit concerned.

Four questions :

1) How difficult is it to remove the jets from the carbs to check the size of the jet?
2) Any idea what the stock jet size is for these boats?
3) Where can I buy replacement jets?
4) If I don't want to mess with it, can anyone recommend a good shop I can send the carbs to in order to have them rebuilt and rejetted back to stock?

Thanks,

Frank

Frank, it isn't difficult to access the main jets on thase carbs. Remove the float bowl (the brass hex head on the bottom), and the main jet is located at the bottom of the casting on the port side. It is also brass, with a slotted head. The size is sometimes stamped either side of the slot. If not, you can use drill bits to get a rough idea, unless you can access some wire gages. A chart I have shows that for an 85, the standard jet was 0.074". I can't verify if that is correct. I have also seen some guidelines for reduced jet sizes for increases in altitude - something like 0.002" for 3000 feet. Don't quote me on that either! Where to buy jets? Not sure, but I see Franz Marine quoted a lot on this forum. As for removing, disassembling, cleaning and reassembling these carbs, if you are slightly mechanically inclined you would have no problem. Rebuild kits are available from iboats, as well as Franz and even NAPA. I'm sure that you will get a pile of responses from those with a lot more knowledge than me. Take it all in, and good luck.

Re: Oh crap.... found a carb jet under the carpet of my boat

Thanks... here is the tricky part. I mostly boat at 5000', but I am taking a trip to a lake that is at 800' this summer, and I have read nasty things about Force engines melting pistons if not jetted correctly. So I want to at least figure out where I am at on this, and what I might need to bring with me.

If anyone can point me to a carb rebuild kit number (I checked the iboats kits) for this engine, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks again,

Frank

Frank;

There are several models of the 85 for 1989. Do you have the model number of your engine?

Re: Oh crap.... found a carb jet under the carpet of my boat

Found a list for jets online.... looks like the following :

for 0-2500' F10212 0.074"
for 2500 to 5000 F10213 0.072"
for 5000 to 7500 F10214 0.070"
for 7500 to 10000 F10215 0.068"

I'll probably go with the 213 as the standard for my boat as elephant butte is the lowest I typically boat, at 4464, but I also fish Heron lake at 7200'. Also get some 212 jets for my trip to Arkansas.

Still need a rebuild kit number, or suggestion on parts to replace in the kit. All suggestions welcome!

Yes... I incorrectly posted 89 above. I found a picture of my motor tag and it is an 88.

You need to take the carb apart and look for the #s on the jet!!!Very TINY!!!TINY!!! #s
A boat that was made in 88 could have as many as 10 owners or maybe 2.Could have been bought in Fl and moved to Denver.
Contact Bayliner/US Marine with the serial#s and they can tell you where it was delivered for sale. They might give you the carb info too.
Changing the needle and seat doesn't mean the jets have been changed.
