Re: Ohms affect performance?

Same subject, round 4. Like BoatBuoy said, " we have to start over" What?... a "tube amp"? .......... just kidding. I'm glad you made it. Myself, I can't complain. B.A EE USC class of 97. Worked for the IBEW. Now active non-working member. Got into Real estate. I have 4 rental properties. Best investment i ever made. Waiting to reinvest in more properties as soon as the market swing the other way to take advantage of the poor working class families loosing thier homes. Yes I am a bad person. Very bad. Please no hate mail. Got into film (not the kind you take your family to see). To date sold 19 scenes. I do Alaska every summer. And ofcourse car Audio and movie editing is my hobby. To sum it up, I have been unemployed for 2 years now, but yet I don't have time to take the boat out. Calling unemployment office tomorrow. Don't know why i waited so long. Hmmm door bell. Gonna go see who is behind door # 1. Excuse my silliness, I'll see you on the next post. HAPPY BOATING

Re: Ohms affect performance?

Same thing with tube amps, just not nearly as good damping factor, and a tube amp can be damaged by not providing enough of a load, as well as too much of a load. What waterone told you in his posts is correct. I might also add don't exceed the minimum impedance load rating of the amp, otherwise you will be dropping more voltage across the output transistors and emitter resistors in the amp. This means more power, but in the form of heat in the amp, not audio output, until the amp burns up. Maximum power will be developed with the minimum rated impedance that the amp can safely drive. As watertone also mentioned, box tuning is very important, and very few of the "blat" boxes I have heard in the car industry are properly tuned for the individual speaker parameters. every type of speaker has different excursion limits and air volume loading, coil inductance, free air resonance etc. All these parameters have to be taken into consideration to build a truly efficient and nice?? sounding sub.If you are just concerned about making lottsa noise for awhile, disregard everything above. Hope this helps.<br />B. Yacey, Electronics Technician / Audio Engineer

waterone1, would you happen to be a competitor of EAW? Not trying to out you, just trying to see what your specific area of interest was.

Bill, you are correct. Waterone1 is also correct. I stand corrected. I am just a Jedi trying to earn my stripes. You are the Yoda!! I'll take a step back. As you were.

No problem GQ, in the audio industry there seems to be a lot of half truths and a mystical veil over this stuff for some reason. I don't make any claims of knowing everything, but I have reconed enough speakers and rebuilt enough power amps to know what the limiting factors are. RatRacer mentioned EAW. If you want to see / hear some awesome devices, check out Community's M4 compression mid range driver, The most efficient thing I have ever seen in Pro Audio, unbelievable. Apparently the US Navy has used these for communicating over open water as far as 18 miles away.
