Oil Alarm issue

I have a 1997 Yamaha salt water series II 200hp engine. I had an issue with the alarm going off and the mechanic changed the sensor In the tank on the engine. Seemed to fix the issue.

After a few trips here the alarm goes off again and I look at the tank on the engine and the level is at the bottom line. I pushed up the switch to fill it and it did not seem to increase the level. Took the top off tank and added ail manually above the top line. Alarm still went off. Took out again and took off screen and moved float up and down with key on and it worked like it should have. Put mesh together but put sensor down real slowly and alarm did not sound. Ran for like 8 miles no issues. Take off the cover and the level is still at/above the top line.

Question, what is going on? Lol How does this work only pump when sensor gets to a certain point? I can?t figure out how to explain it. Help!!!

Re: Oil Alarm issue

do some forum searching this problem has been cover many times.\
here is one that may help http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=440420

Thanks. From what I can tell the link does answer one of my questions but not the main one, why did the level go down in the first place and filling it back up manually and now seems to be ok/refilling on own? What happened to make it not transfer then seemingly work again?

And some of the symptoms or things to check I did at beginning of season like changed remote tank filter and new hoses cleaned remote tank filtered the oil etc.

It did answer the transfer issue. Had 1989 yammies before and they did as the article said transfer without engine running so through it worked the same, obviously not and I did not have engine running no transfer oil with switch up.

Re: Oil Alarm issue

Seems I remember reading about float binding/sticking on engine mounted tank caused by deformed parts but do not know which motors, may want to drain, clean, and inspect that tank also

Re: Oil Alarm issue

Well it was the oil transfer pump. And it worked on and off. Took it off and hooked to 12v worked then shut off, power to it on and off it woudl come on for a second then shut off. Put in a new pump and it filled up just like it it's supose to.

Thanks for all the help
