There's about 3" of clearance between the bottom of the oil pan and the hull in my '88 Regal. I lined a shallow cardboard box with trash bags and drained the oil into it, but then I made a mess ladling the oil it out of the box. Has anyone come up with a better solution? I've heard about sucking the oil out through the dipstick tube, but that seems even more likely to create a mess.

Howdy,

Sucking it up through the dipstick tube is usually the way to do it.....

If you have a pan drain, you can easily install a drain hose

Like this one from Overtons

I use a Moeller pump to do my boat and trans fluid etc....like this one from Jamestown....In fact I think I bought it from them!

Then you can easily suck it out. If you have a transom drain with a big enough hole, you can fish the hose thru it when you want to drain the oil and the oil will "fall" out via gravity (although it will take long.....and the hose is all nasty and oily after it's been in there a while and you have to stand on your head to get it out thru the hole!!)

I use the above hose clamped to my port riser and a vac pump to suck the oil out. Hot or cold, I get it all in about 5-10 min.

Rick

Just did both my engines..sucked it out of the dipstick tube, just like HT shows.

No, you don't pull the drain plug and let it run out the transom plug, even though that's been done for decades...........
