i have a 1993 johnson 25hp that was given to me. i got it running but then after i cut it off it dripped oil/water mixture out of the top pee hole in the lower unit. i took the lower unit apart, put new gaskets on the water pump and put it back together. fired it up and again after i cut it off it drips water/oil mixture that turns to just oil after a few minutes. any ideas?

Re: oil draining from pee hole

The top "pee" hole in the lower unit is a drain from the exhaust housing and it is quite normal that it drains water and some unburned fuel.In fact it is a sign that the hole is not plugged up.

Re: oil draining from pee hole

If the oil is black and gungy then it is most probably just partly burnt oil from the fuel and is normal. If it is clean and obviously gear oil then It is leaking from the gear case, most probably as dannyman3 says leaking from the drive shaft seals below the water pump. The seals are #23 in THIS DIAGRAM

Check the gear case oil for signs of water ingress.

it is draining from the top hole in the lower unit. so i am hoping like ya'll said that it is just some unburnt oil from the fuel. it is black and i have drained the lower unit once and it was not cloudy like it was mixed with water. thanks!

if the lower unit does not have any water in the oil i'd say you are good to go!

Re: oil draining from pee hole

Just another case of oil coming out the drain holes. Absolutely normal and the question comes up every day.
One more time: Every drop of the oil that you put in the gas (or oil tank) goes through the engine. Some of it burns (smoke) and the rest goes out the exhaust. When you shut it off, all the water and exhaust residue drains out. Those drain holes ensure that none of it stays in there to freeze or corrode.
