Oil everywhere

So I just pulled my Fourwinns 180 out of the river and as I'm getting it ready to trailer home I pull the drain plug. And the worst thing I've ever seen comes oooozing out. So I say a quick prayer and lift the cover to see my fear is true. I have brown goopy oil all over my engine. I have to wait till Monday to take it in, but in true boater fashion I'm scrambling to figure out how bad it is, and how much it will cost before I take it in. The 4th in only a couple weeks away and the family will be devastated if were not on the water. The engine is a Volvo Penta 4.3 190 horse. Its the original in my 2000 horizon 180. Anyone have to have a engine rebuilt? I'm looking for ballpark price and time. Thanks.

Sorry for your misfortune!

The costs for replacement depends on depth of damage (heads, block, intakes, risers, etc...), area, shop rates and how much you can tackle yourself. I just replaced my 5.0L (302ci) Ford in my CC...spent $1000 on a shortblock and bolted on all the original heads, manifolds and associated equipment....

Pull the motor and assess the damage and then get back to us.

Merely a guesstimate....Minimum: $1,000.00 Maximum:$6,000.00

What maintenance was recently done? Double O-rings left on the oil filter - dipstick left out - oil cap left off?

Are you sure something catastrophic happened?

Your engine block is likely cracked. Won't be able to rebuild it.

Did you drain your engine block? I take it you are in an area with freezing temps?

I will get back when I find out exactly where the problem is. This is not the first time we ran it this year, so I don't think its a cap missing or something like that. With the oil everywhere its impossible for me to find the source, but I'm sure the mechanic will. As far as freezing, down here in Louisiana it really doesn't drop below 32, and if it does its just for a bit overnight. It was winterized too. The real question I will have IMO is rebuild, or new crate.

Hole in a rusty oil pan? Check the dipstick fitting where it connects to the oil pan.

Does your engine have a remote oil filter? Volvo had issues in the early 2000's with the fittings. I had this happen on a 2003 5.7gi. One of the oil lines came loose and oil sprayed everywhere, what a mess. Come to find out it was part of a silent recall and Volvo repaired it for free.

Update; So its a cracked block, which is what I was expecting. There are a number of sites I'm looking at to order my new block, but my concern is the repair shop. They are wanting to replace everything. Manifolds to carburetor. From anyone who has serious knowledge, what should I expect to replace and what should I expect to use from old. I can't imagine needing to replace anything outside of the block/heads. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry to the news. Good news you can keep anything that was belt driven, intake, carbs and likely your heads. But if the block is cracked the exhaust manifolds are most likely to be cracked as well.
