Hello all...quick question obout the Lower Gear Oil (motor make and model is in my signature). The maintenance manual says to use Evinrude/Johnson Ultra-HPF Gear lubricant. What oil can I use in place of the manufacturer specific oil? Can I use regular valvoline 80w 90 oil? I do not have an Evinrude dealer within 100 miles so I am looking for a useful alternative. Thank-you and Good-Day!

The recommended oil is 80-90 outboard gear oil, it has additives to protect the lower if you have water intrusion. Just be sure to replace the crush washers on the vent and drain screws when you do this. Do not reuse the old ones.

Any marine gear oil for mechanical shift motors will work fine. I try to use a synthetic marine gear oil in late 90s and newer motors. It is just my preference, however,

Thank-you for the replies! I have some plug seals ordered form iboats now and will be changing out my gearcase oil when they arrive.
