Oil Indicator Plug

I have an 89 5.0 OMC Cobra 502APRMED.

I ordered the oil indicator plug washer for the outdrive, that this model calls for. OMC 0912830 WASHER. It arrived and it is a hard clear-ish plastic washer, like the ones on the gear case drain, and fill screws/plugs.

The old one was mashed, but looked more like an o ring rubber seal?

Pretty noob question, but for fear of water damage, I though I would ask, if I do, in fact, have the right one?

Thank you MB

I am assuming you mean the dipstick pug? Should be plastic.

I don't doubt it. There is a guy on here that keeps telling people it's an o-ring. Later years may have gone to an o-ring which is why there is confusion.

In my opinion, these guys are correct. I have a later (92) and different OMC drive with part number 303067 which is and is listed as an O-Ring. Your 912830 is listed as a Washer. Both results from here: BRP -- Parts Catalogs , which has proven to be reliable info for parts in my experience.

Re: Oil Indicator Plug

The older OMC/Cobra/Stringer drives used the hard plastic washer.
They changed to the newer soft plastic in later years.
The old only works for a short time and then leaks.
The newer works better.

Thanks guys for the help, and info. It appears in 1990 they went from the plastic washer, to the rubber o-ring.

Thank again MB

They also changed the dipstick and the cover so you still have to use the plastic one for yours.

Re: Oil Indicator Plug

Thank you, I wondered about that as well. Different dipstick, for the newer ones.

Whenever you replace the gear lube you replace all 3 plug's gaskets. If you do that, you will never have a leak.
