Do you trust your injector to mix the oil proportionately. I ask because i just bought this boat with a 2004 Merc 50 2 stroke and the guy told me he always adds a gallon to the gas when he fills up! (20) gallon tank i think, but boat does not idle good (runs rich). I was wondering how to check injector for the proper oil injection and if i need to keep adding oil to gas?

Re: Oil injector

You need to explain a little better as I don't think the motor would want to start if that much oil was added to a oil injected system let alone idle. It would foul plugs, right and left. The only reason to mix your oil would be if the injection system is disconnected.

What? 1 gal of oil in a 20 gal tank is a 20:1 mix add another 50:1 at the oil pump and I'm suprised it even starts.

Check your fuel tank, I hope it's a lot bigger than you think. If it's not, drain it, replace the fuel with unmixed fuel and use the automatic oiler only. It's very reliable.

Re: Oil injector

Its a pontoon boat and i can see the tank, just guessing on size but the guy i got it from told me thats what he always did when he filled it up. The oil reservoir sits on top of engine and i can see a filter that looks like either gas or oil moving thru it (but of course it would look like oil with that rich a concentration). I just was curious about how to check to make sure it was injecting.

Re: Oil injector

I've been adding about an ounce/gallon "insurance" oil to the gas, and even that is giving me a bit of trouble and I have to stop it.

You need to determine whether he disconnected the oil pump. The problem is, Johnnyrudes are notorious for having oil delivery systems that fail at the worst possible moment (if you want a technical explanation you'll find it over in the Johnnyrude section), so lots of people assume that applies to Mercs as well. However, it doesn't, because Mercs employ a much better system. If you can, contact the PO and ask him/her about it. Then you'll have a starting point. Good luck and welcome!

If when you turn on the ignition key you get a few diagnostic beeps, then your oil injection is in place and well.

hope it helps
