1966 evinrude 33hp ski twin with a split gear case housing is leaking oil but cannot find the source. Since it is a split case, I'm wondering if its leaking from the bolts that hold it together. Does the split case require some type of sealer or will the spaghetti ring be enough?

There is all new seals including new spaghetti ring where the cases meet.

hmmm... did you pressure test it? .. sometime the seals are bad from the factory and only a pressure test will show them

also what did you use to seal the two halve beside the spagetti seal? did you put a little sealer on the threads of the screws holding the two halves together?

I'm not familiar with pressure testing. Could I try adding gasket sealer where the two halves meet as well as the screw holes?

Re: oil leak from lower unit gearcase

you mean you didnt put it on from the get go ...? use 3M #847 or OMC adhesive M almost anything else wont hold up to the gear oil ..... permatex makes some stuff but im not sure what its called - make sure you get all the gear oil off the mating surfaces AND you put a bead around the gearcase head in front of and on the oring
also make sure that the spagetti seal is about 1/8" long on each end and place a dab of sealer there too any of these things are common places to leak...

Re: oil leak from lower unit gearcase

should be good to go if you pay close attention to where you put the sealer and MAKE SURE you get it clean and dry before you apply

oh and put it on BOTH halves of the gearcase ! you want to incase that spaggetti seal in sealer leave the screws a little loose for an hour or so and THEN wrench down on them this will give you a nice tight seal and alows the sealer to set up a bit

wipe off the excess BEFORE it dries or itll be on there FOREVER
