Oil Leak on 55HP Chrysler

I took my motor out and fired it up a few weeks ago and it seems to create a lot of oil on the water. I noticed that the 2 holes above the prop seem to be leaking oil (at least they did when I took it out of the water). Is this normal for these motors or is there something I should be looking at? This is my first outboard motor I've owned so still trying to understand everything that goes into it.

Hang on Sir! One of the Experienced Techs will get to you Soon. If not Re-Post with “Hello Chrysler Techs, Nordin, Frank, Others X 55hp Help”. I saw your attached pic but could not compare it to my 1970 35hp Chrysler as some that are related.

My guess will be unburned gas/oil draining down from the exhaust. Smell for the presence of gas which might have become excessive due to a carb or fire matter?? If it’s thick w/o a gas smell it might be an issue with the gasket just above your lower unit. I think the oil looked a little high for a L/U issue??

Attach a full view of your motor with the cover off so I can see your carbs or carb and the length of your L/U’s leg. This should show why my 35hp is not related to your 55hp.

Please do not remove a screw on your Lower Unit that is not marked Vent or Drain (when you service the L/U (which I am not seeing). I feel I am seeing the shift fork screw you do not want to pull. As a reminder, I would clean the area and add silicone over it (to hide the Monster).

That is a Hydro-Dart lower unit which means it is an earlier Chrysler engine. Engines before 1970 had cylinder drains that dribbled unused/unburned oil right into the leg, allowing it to pollute the water instead of being recirculated and burned.

Thanks Frank! Sir, I told you A Pro would help you soon. That is some very interesting info. Some Small Lakes are not allowing heavy polluters now or soon. I experienced why in a small lake that had heavy traffic and my anchor came up contaminated from what I felt was pollution from the traffic on the lake. I try to fish larger lakes away and up-stream from heavy populated areas due to eating my fish. I have seen some heavy populated area’s runoff and sewer enter some lakes during the heavy rains.

What year model is your 55hp? I would like to see that full pic mentioned if possible.

Probably a good idea to check your air/fuel mixture screw to make sure it is set correctly, also your fuel pump diaphragm, but if it is your fuel diaphragm it probably wouldn't run well if at all. Maybe time for a carbie clean and checking of your float levels. My suggestion would be to buy a manual and set carbies air/fuel mixture and float levels to spec. Frank would have more of an idea though.
