I have a 1989 Yamaha 90 hp outboard. I noticed today that theres a small puddle of oil on the ground under the motor. After inspecting it some its coming from the prop shaft. The last time i changed the oil, which was bout 2 months ago i noticed a little more water than usual in the oil.
Is this a task that i can do myself to replace the oil seal at the shaft or does this need to be taked to a certified boat mechanic. Im pretty mechanical myself, ive changed out the power head on this motor and all went well but never messed with the lower unit but to change the oil.. Thanks

Re: Oil Leak

while its not hard to repair if its a freshwater motor there will be a few special tools needed depending on whats leaking.
and ANY water is abnormal, there is no "more than usual" amount of water in a geacase.
next step is to pressure test the gearcase and hunt for leaks. possible leakage spots are drive shaft seal, shift shaft seal, propshaft seal. bearing carrier orings. and bad gaskets on the drain and fill plugs.
before removing driveshaft or propshaft seals use a set of calipers to measure and record the depth the seal is pressed into the housing for reassembly.
