I have a '89 25hp tohatsu. The motor starts up fine and runs well, pumps water fine. However, when I run the motor in a bucket I notice there is a lot of oil residue in the water. It seems more then I have noticed in other two strokes I have ran this way. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

As long as you confirm that the LU is not leaking, you probably have coke and sludge build-up, and are due for a de-carbon. See the FAQ's on that. You may also have been running more than the recommended 50:1 oil ratio, which contributes to coking and sludge build-up. The Tohatsu "Engine Tuner" spray works great for the de-carbon procedure.

Thank you, the LU is not leaking, so I will try this procedure.

And if you thought you had allot of oil in the water just running, wait until you do the decarb! You get allot of crud if it hasn't been done in a long time. After that, a seasonal decarb will not be that bad. I do mine just before the yearly plug change, as part of the spring tune-up.

Can a product like Sea Foam help in an instance such as this? I have a 1991 Tohatsu that probably could use a "de-carbon." I would like to clean the carb at some point, but can I do anything before hand to help?

Nothing will be as effective as disassembling the carb and doing a proper soaking in real carb dip. That said, some minor accumulations may be cleaned up by spraying "cleaner" through the passages -- but you have to remove and disassemble the carb to do that anyway.

This is a different situation from a combustion chamber de-carbon, BTW.
