Oil Light and Alarm

I troll Down-Riggers for stripers so I'm usually at idle speed for hours. Every 6 to 10 minutes or so the Oil Light and alarm will go off. I can turn the motor off and immediately start it back and go another 6 or 10 minutes until it sounds again. At top speed it does not go off. The water pump is new and will blow holed in cardboard its so strong. The oil tank is full of oil. It started doing this a few trips ago but the frequency was much less and seems to be getting worse. By the way not that it matters but I buy Super Tech 2 cycle oil from Wal-Mart. 2000 model 150 Johnson. Any help would be much appreciated

Re: Oil Light and Alarm

Get a digital thermometer and check the head temps. when the alarm goes off. Could be lots of issues. I had the same issue and ignored it and blew my engine.Had it rebuilt and shortly thererafter started to do the same thing. How is your oil consumption? You may start using premix to insure you do not blow the engine. My problem was a bad fuel pump. Replaced it and have not had the issue since.I have a 1995 150 Evinrude.

You could have a bad system check tach on it or a vro that is going bad. Use premix in your tank until you get it fixed.

What oil alarm sounds? No oil or low oil?

The OMC Service Manual contains OMS tests for oil useage in a certain time, at a certain speed. You might run these, while using premix.

You guys have been a huge help!!:D Where can I go to print off such directions which would show me how to check my oil and do the test that you mention? I was going to order a VRO pump but like you say it may not be bad. I don have the owners manual for the motor.

An OEM Service Manual may be had from several places on the web. One of those is the marineengine website. There are some places to D/L ones in PDF form, as well.

One of the OMS tests to to check for the pump's ability to self-prime. I would make sure to run that one.
