Ok. Here are a few pictures of what is happening:
http://204.26.80.53:8080/boat/motor.jpg

closeup is:
http://204.26.80.53:8080/boat/closeup.jpg

I did some testing in the driveway, and figured out what is happening. Now
I need to figure out why.

After running the engine for about 15 minutes.. stopping... then running
about 15 again. stopping.. then running again, the small oil tank on the
engine began to over fill. Usually, the oil is up to the top line that is
on the side of the reservoir. On the third run of the engine, it started to
fill, until oil was coming out of the small vent hole on the top right side.
Oil also started to come out of the air intake by the carbs (See the Red
towel on the picture, this was catching the oil as it dripped out).

I took out the float switch from the oil reservoir, and took it apart to
clean it. When I inserted it back into the reservoir (which was COMPLETELY
full of oil.. I could see the float floating to the top. I have to assume
this float switch is not working for some reason and causing the engine to
continue to pump oil even though it is full.

what do you think? Anyone ever have this go bad, and how much do you think
it costs to replace?

Second, since I know the engine is getting enough (too much oil), is there a
way to bypass this switch so I can at least run the engine. Knowing its
about a 50:1 ratio, I could burn a tank of gas on the oil in the reservoir
and not have any problems. I really want to run this on the 4th, but can't
get in to the shop until next week.

If someone thinks it is the switch.. I may be able to get one tomorrow and
replace it myself.

Thanks for any help!

Now here is a stupid question. Is this little reservoir considered the
"Main Tank" or is it the "reserve"?

Hey,
I see that this thread is pretty old, but did you ever find out why it was doing this? I'm having the same issues?

Hello mate I have an 85ish yamaha 175 v6 I had the same problem when running the motor out of the water, so I replaced the float switch/oil cap (?85) to find the new one still did it ! I took it out on the water with it disconnected at the oil tank inside the boat, connected it back up again out at sea and it worked perfect, which I cannot explain but I would check all the connections on both oil tanks as that was the only thing I did and it sort itself out
