My 1998 5.0 mercruiser when I purchased it had 10-30 oil in it and pressures were low at idle and aroud 40lbs at wide open throttle. I changed oil and installed straight 30w in it. Now at idle I have 35-40lbs and at wide open needle is at 80lbs. Is this right or too high? I am going to check pressure with a remote guage tomorrow to check seinding unit an guage. Also my rpms dropped to 4100 at WOT. Used to be 4400.

Re: oil pressure

Changing oil from 10W-30 to 30 alone will not normally bump your oil pressure up that much. Was the old oil really dirty?
I think you might have a blockage somewhere. The filter is definitely the right one?

You might see those values when the engine is cold, warm it up and I would bet it comes down.

Re: oil pressure

The engine was at temp 165 degrees. Never ran hot or anything. Just oil pressure guage was at 80. Could it be the wrong oil filter. I put one on, on friday exact same dimensions and all. Napa crossed it using their book. Only difference we could see was the cup on the inside where the oil goes in was up and the original filter which was a Sierra was down. Could that be the cause. ( I know get one and try it right?) LOL. Also could the cause of the WOT loss be the high oil pressure?

Re: oil pressure

oil level is just a tick over maybe 1/8 quart. I will drain it and get it dead on but my main concern is the loss of WOT. would the high oil pressure case that. And before I run it again I will also replace the oil filter with a mercruiser filter. I am thinking the NAPA gold filter they gave me has too much filter material in it and is giving me the high pressure.

Re: oil pressure

Haut, I appreciate the help. I am just wondering if the high pressure will decrease my WOT. I just got done going thru Dons WOT list and it turned out to be my carb needing a good bath and a rebuild. Which I did myself and was actually prety easy. So I know all is good.

Re: oil pressure

oh ok, so I guessI better find my blockage then. The 165 was on the pond. It has a 160 degree t-stat in it. Actually i better check it with a oil pressure guage to check the guage and sender first.
