Re: Oil Seal

Gerry
thanks to you I have finally found my model no.
the 0B s/n I found on the transom mounting bracket
I did not use a parts list nor do I have a part no. I took the old seal to a local shop and bought similar. The seal now installed measures
41, 28, 7 mm which seems a good fit ( but still leaks )
I have no idea if the powerhead had been changed by previous owners.
Upon reading Oldman 570 post , I remember buying an original cowling mount part no. 90435 ( Quicksilver, Mercury ) for my engine. Perhaps this may help.
Thank you
Joe

Re: Oil Seal

Hi CharlieB
I only replaced 1 seal on the prop shaft
Perhaps when I find my model diagram I would know better.
Btw if there is a second seal would it be right behind the first ?
Cheers

I did had a piece of carpet caught on the prop ( which did not stop the engine ) the other day.
I don't think my prop shaft is bent but I will try to check for its straightness .
If loctite ( the thread locking type right ? ) is a santioned procedure, then it may be my solution. Will find out as well.

Re: Oil Seal

Joe;

If the 0B number was found on the transom bracket and the powerhead has the 06520508 number, then the powerhead was changed or the powerhead was added to a different complete lower assembly. Let's leave that for the moment.

Here is a link to a lower end very close to yours.

Mercury & Mercruiser Parts, GEAR HOUSING (PROPELLER SHAFT)(WITH A DRIVE SHAFT NUT), 150 H.P. XR-2 MARATHON MAGNUM (V-6) (1978-1985 COMBINED BOOK)

You said in post #5 that an attempt to remove the carrier resulted in a few broken teeth. Did you mean that there was damage to Retainer, item 72 in the link? If so, did you use a punch to try and remove it?

The bearing carrier is item 67, which would have had to be removed to replace both seals, item 69 and O ring, item 66. Did you remove the bearing carrier and if not, how did you replace the one seal?

Re: Oil Seal

You need to remove the carrier to do this repair properly.. also some models use 2 different size seals as inner OD is smaller thanthe outter seal due tosome had a weed cutter seal.

Re: Oil Seal

If you only changed one seal and still have leakage then the other seal is leaking as well and I would do as Faztbullet says and remove the carrier. and do a proper repair of both seals.Loctite is recommended on lower engine seals therefore I would assume it should be used on the lower unit prop seals. Primer for the loctite will harden if fast. if you don,t use the primer it will only harden about 70 % and thats in time and could wash away before it does. JMO I cannot confirm this but it is worth looking in to. It will also help to seal any small fracture or nick ding etc to a small degree.

The link doesn't seem to work for me. An error message appears. I tried accessing independently via crowley marine website but that didn't work either. Same error msg.
Is it possible you send me the diagram via email. I am joehowe121@gmail.com
many thanks

The 1 seal I removed I just pry it off the propeller shaft ( after removing the prop ).

just to the outer rim of the seal between it and the casing It will seal the outter perimiter and fill any minor scratches scuffs etc

I think the item numbers are different in the 2 links
In the ********** diagram which i can open:
retainer is item 75
seals are items 71, 72
o ring is item 68
and bearing carrier is 69 (?)
In attempting to remove the bearing carrier I damaged some teeth on the retainer. I used a hammer and a screwdriver. And heat as well. It just wouldn't budge. On the rim of the retainer there is an arrow that points in an anticlockwise direction with the word OFF beside it.

Re: Oil Seal

View attachment 179846 Teeth on the plastic nut that holds the carrier in? They are accesible and not too expensive. I split mine to get it off. After removing it use a piece of heavy plywood with a hole drilled for the propshaft. You can try to use the prop and prop nut as a puller to dislodge the propshaft if you can,t get the carrier to come out, But try to get the carrier out first without moving the propshaft.

Re: Oil Seal

If you're doing the seal replacement correctly, and you're still getting leaks, check the shaft runout and mike it to see if on spec. Never use silicone or sealants for this. Any scratches or line cuts on shaft that will let oil out?
