Re: oil thread

glad to hear yer sure yer drained.
if ya didn't run it after an oil chg. i'd think the level would be high on the stick cause the oil filter wouldn't be filled up....that'd be my next guess anyways....

filled the filter and installed it, put in 5 qts, marked stick as add; put in one more qt(holds 6 with filter), marked stick as full. Drained block for winter, but now level is up 3 "s:'(

Re: oil thread

Even if I put 7 in it, and marked it; it still shouldn't rise by itself.

No it should not. Seems to me the thing to do is pump it out/drain it into a clear container and see what ya got. Only way to tell.

Re: oil thread

It's possible if the fuel tank vent is plugged for storage so the tank is pressurized for the fuel pump diaphram so leak fuel in the crankcase, if it's water just loosen the drain plug on the pan before turning the engine over and the water will be on the bottom of the pan and will come out first, if is oil your good

Re: oil thread

good thinking Laddies.

It's cooling water, rain water, or it's fuel.

Re: oil thread

sounds like yer pretty sure the level raised over the winter, even though it seems it may have been overfilled. seems like what l-t and laddies says is the way to go. drain it one way or the other to find out if it's contaminated, and if so, by what. havein a look is gonna be the only way yer gonna know prior to start up if ya got and issue. yer gonna have to get rid of some of the oil anyways. chose yer poisen. thru the drain hole or a siphon sucker.......maybe you'll get lucky and be able to determin what the facts is while gettin rid of the extra 2 or 3 qt. of oil......

Re: oil thread

so, this am, I check the oil; 3 inches high. I check 2 hours later- high. I rig up a pump to pull from the bottom of the oil pan- now the oil level is 1/2 qt high, only?. Both rocker covers are vented, so it can't be a pressure issue. Ghost in the machine? (and , yes , can read a dipstick)

Re: oil thread

i guess i just aint gettin it. ok, so ya gots issues with yer stick. so ya R&R it with what i'd supose is the right one. ya drain it empty. yer cap. is 6 includeing the filter. a half qt. filter, or a qt. filter? ya put in 5qt.s, + ya filled the filter for the 6. then added a qt. for 7. ya just sucked off some (how much?) and now yer a 1/2 qt. overfull. how much above full would that be on yer presumably proper new dipstick? i personaly could only guess that i'm a half qt. overfull on my stick. and it's oem best of my knowledge. what'd ya suck off the bottom of the pan. oil. ?. one question i don't know is weather fuel floats on oil, or does oil float on fuel. that might be a good question....why'd ya fill up the filter and not run it at winterization? tommays sugestest the method i use too. ya never ran it and got the oil through out the oil system.......once ya had it empty. put the proper amount in it. - a qt , start it. check level, put in another qt. to compensate for the filter. run it. check it. adj. minorly for proper level. mark yer level if not correct on the stick. if it's up from there. back to i'd be worried. fuel, water, whatever. i still think there aint no oil fairys........
personaly, i'd go back to square one. empty it. check for contaminets. if non found. fill it with the proper amount per the oem sevice manual. make sure the stick is marked proper. and go from there......
