i asked for help last night before i had surgery and only a couple helped(thanks for you 2) but i had surgery today and i'm really laid up now. i have a 1998 baja with a 7.4 mercruiser with very low hours. anyway this spring it cranked right up on 1st try. i had my detail guys give it a bath and they also sprayed off the engine compartment, but not directly on engine. but the drain hole stopped up and and water got up around to the starter level. the enginge began spinning over by itself without turning the key. the next day i tried to start it up it was completely dead. no dash lights, no beeps nothing at all. well it sat for several days and i put a slow charger on it. checked the battery connections and they were loose, so i tightened them up and bam...it fired right up. i noticed the volt gauge while idling and it read about 11.5 volts idling. well i have a bad power tilt switch and went into town to get a new one, i replaced it and went to check it out...nothing at all. no spin, no tilt no gauges, nothing. i thought it was the ground so i started tracking the ground to the "ground post" on the back of the block. i removed it and cleaned the post and connections really well. it now has a little electric current, but not enough to crank. not even enough to run any 2 swithches such as blower and bilge at the same time. what should i do next. the starter was replace a month ago and had been cranking good. i dont think the starter is bad, i think it is electrical related cause when there is enough fire going to starter it fires. anyway i'm laid up pretty good and have a couple of reinds coming over to help me at 530 eastern time wednesday, i sure would like to have some really good ideas what and where to check, so please help

if your "detail guys" are professionals (a properly liscensed and insured buisness) I would take it to a shop for an estimate of repairs and call thier insurance company for payment.

Re: ok guys i blew out my knee and really need help

ok i kinda got an update. i begged a couple of relatives to come over and give me a hand and this is what we've found out. i'm laid up and can't move, but this is what they are telling me. if they put the battery charger on battery(i've had the battery checked with a digital checker..they said it was good) if you turn the blower on, it works but boat wont crank. if you turn blower off, the engine cranks right up if u wait a second or two after turning off the blower motor. if you crank engine, then turn blower on, it kills the engine. the exact same thing happens if you turn on running lights or trim the outdrive. i have no gauge lights and the voltmeter with engine running is barely 10 volts. help anyone?

If the battery is always dead and the engine dies if the blower is turned on Im thinking something is up with the alternator. May not be the alternator but at least something is wrong with the charging system. Since the battery was dead for so long it may be bad now also.

If the motor was cranking itself without the key being turned then youve got some bad shorts going on somewhere. You say the starter is new, was this before or after they filled it up with water?

Not sure about the dash lights...

It's going to take a little time. The starter was submerged in standing water. . First inspect everything. Water get in the oil via dipststick or some other way (over the pan, I would check). Pull the starter and it will have to be disassembled and checked. (Cranking by itself while underwater) Batteries submerged? if they were, probably toast. Have them charged and load tested. Any wiring that was submerged and the associated connections. If there were any cracks in the wiring's insulation, it may be early for this yet, but they will also corrode over time. Not a good scenario but recoverable. I'm sure there's more, folks will be letting you know. I'd start here...

hi there why you dont check the alternator? take the alternator out and go to any auto parts they can check it for you, if you have a voltimeter you can check it too.

I agree with checking the alternator. If you only have 11.5VDC when the motor si running, the alternator is not charging. In addition, alternators have a set of diodes which sometimes short to ground. One spring I started the boat up and ran it while I tested the cooling, oil pressure charging. I finished all the tests and everything wa 5X5. ten minutes later the alternator started smoking (engine was off), and I needed to disconnect the battery to avoid a fire

update: found the problem. on my baja hammer the wiring harness runs into a compartment behind the gauge cluster. there are no drain holes in this compartment so whenever water could get in there, it would just stay, so my big wiring harness, was just laying in about 3 inches of water and was corroded up badly. just wanted to give some closure to this topic. thanks for all the help
