Re: Ok guys I'm stumped.

If you are using a stock coil it must be used with a resistive wire but the pertronix unit must run full voltage. So if you have stock coil and pertronix you will have to run each one off a different wire. If you are using an internally ballisted coil then you can run them both off of 12v. Sounds to me like you may have a stock coil and feeding it the full voltage which will overheat it or may be killing it.

i bought the full kit which came with the coil and the distributor. i originally had the thunderbolt iv system on it. and replaced that with the new coil that is used with that kit also. same issure with that set up also. but the new set up is all new too.

".... i ran a stand alone wire from my ignition to the coil and it only went up to 9.97 volts"

Okay....so what is the voltage TO the ignition?? (check both sides of the switch)

EddiePetty has a point -- that voltage comes from the ignition switch -- if you have more voltage on one side of it than you do on the other, then you need a new ignition switch

Re: Ok guys I'm stumped.

just ran out and checked that. i do have 12.06 at the switch. actually have it on two prongs. the third out will try to try to engage the starter. then when i go back to the coil without the negitive side grounded i have 11.71. battery is showing 12.5
when the boat is running i have 13.4 on the positive side of the coil.

Re: Ok guys I'm stumped.

ok so im gona try and rule everything out with this next trip. im going to replace the fuel pump, install an additional inline fuel filter before it. new fuel line to the tank. also im going to take a 5 gallon gas can with me, so if i have issues i can use that as a stand alone fuel source.

im not sure why when the negitive side of the coil is grounded i only have 9.2 volts on the positive side. but i know that i have 12v at the switch and close to 12 at the coil when its not grounded. and that when running it has 13.4 volts. if the problem occurs again im going to take a jumper from the battery to see if that cures it.

any other ideas before i go out again please let me know.

i just want one trip out this season that i have no probelms. so i can enjoy my boat.

your going about it right, eliminating problems, but if it were me, I'd hook up a new can of clean good fuel (taking everything else out of the loop as far as your tank, vent, dirty fuel, etc). If the problem occurs again, you can stop chassing those issues. If it doesn't, then you didn't spend the time and money changing fuel pump and changing filters unnecessarily. Its an easy way to rule those things out. Unless of course you want to change them anyway, then have at it.

good luck.

Re: Ok guys I'm stumped.

well I think it's the fuel pump. Out on the water now. After installing new line from the tank to the water seperator housing I put a clear fuel filter in line after being out for 5 minutes I decided full throttle would make the problem happen faster. Sure did little clear filter went dry. Tied up a a dock sent a buddy to the auto parts store for a fuel pump. Weird part is if I give it 5 min it will fill up again and run for a few minutes before drying out again.

Sounds more like the tank or lines. If the filter is going dry then the pump is pulling it in but the supply is running out. FishHog has a great idea.

well after all of this i think the problem is the little check ball in my aluminum pickup tube. im going to remove the little spring and ball, to see what happens. this is the only thing left between the new fuel line and the tank.

Re: Ok guys I'm stumped.

Thank you to everyone who helped me through this. The problem was the anti siphon valve. replaced the valve and had a great time on the water this weekend.
