OK, here's my delima, I recently bought my boat from a friend that has owned since 1980. This is the first Mercury I have owned and don't know a lot about the distributor ignitions. The problem I have is that the tab broke off the distributor(under the cap), a local mechanic had a fairly new distributor off a blown 150hp that he sold me and he installed it, now the motor will not run over 2000 rpm's in the water and when i checked the timing it would not even read on the sticker at idle and WOT (max advance) it was only reading about 3-5 btdc.
The motor is a 1977 Merc 115hp and i done a compression check and it is as follows, #1 137, #2 133, #3 140, #4 137, #5 136, #6 135. I am running a 13" x 19 prop, all 3 carbs have been taken off and rebuilt, this motor has ran well before in the past because I have been on it numerous times but the boat has sit for 3 years and I was the one that accidentlly broke the dist. tab off.
I guess after rambling on is, how do I get the timing where it needs to be so that I can use Clams, lync and sync procedure? The mechanic that installed the distributor is so far behind that it will be another month or two before I get it back and I really don't want to wait on him again.
Thanks,
Rob

It sounds like your mechanic took the flywheel apart at the hub and didn't get it back togather right. Put something into #1 spark plug hole and turn the engine to TDC and ck the timing marks on the flywheel

Thanks guys, I did call him again today and he said he may or may not have time tommorrow, I need to call him in the morning. If he can not get to it, how difficult is this because I do most of the work on everything I have, I looked at it somewhat and it did'nt look to be too hard. I just don't want to screw up anything.
Thanks,
Rob

It will not be hard at all.
If you cant get it high enough by turning the timing screw. It will probably be one tooth off at the timeing belt. simply advance it one tooth at the trigger. Like Laddie said check your time marks at the flywheel and at the pully at the trigger make sure they line up.(Or real close)
Also keep in mind that you can check or set the timing at cranking speed (It does not have to be runing) Just take off coil wire. Take nut off throttle arm where you can work it by hand and have someone crank it over while you check timing with lignt. Tim

p.s. make sure you don't set it over 21 max advance.

Thanks Tim,
If I can't get him to do it tomorrow I will try your procedure, my only question is that you said to move timing belt 1 tooth, which way do I move portside or starboard?
Again thanks, and I will let you know one way or the other,
Rob

Time2Fish, I recommend you make sure the timing pointer on that motor is set properly. If not, all the timing readings will be incorrect. The way I do it is as follows. Set the #1 piston to TDC as best as you can. Stick a ruler into the cylinder and measure the distance to the top of the piston. Add that distance to .464, and turn the flywheel until the piston is that much "down" from the plug opening. Now adjust the timing pointer until it points to the .464 BTDC mark on the flywheel decal.
Now move the flywheel to TDC, and remove the distributor pulley cover. The cast arrow on the top of the dist. pulley should point to the flywheel. If not, remove the toothed belt and make it so. Now you can use the Link and Synch post from Clams.

Re: OK, need help with 115hp inline

OK guys, great news. I called my mechanic today and he said to bring it over, I got there about 11:00 and left at 2:00, seems like what happened was that the bearing in the distributor had started going out and that made the plate under the rotor button to spin just a little.
We had to pull the distributor out and rebuild it with new disk and bearings, took it to the lake and she runs like a mosiqito on drugs, never missed or skiped a beat, now I can use Clams procedure to get it perfect once this thunderstorm passes.
Another great thing was it only cost me $80 for everything, he let me help and did'nt charge me much labor at all for 3 hours of work.
Thanks again,
Rob
