OK so i bought ANOTHER Starcraft

I could NOT pass up. I responded to an ad a local boat dealer had on craigslist. They had gone thru their several outhouses on the property and more importantly the 2nd floor of their warehouse which was packed with 60 years of boat parts and garbage.
Long story short i came across a half stripped 1968 Jet Star 15' in great condition. I think the boat was on the water for a year or less as the transom is original to the boat and its mint.
The biggest problem is the telescoping stern light is gone, the boat is in peices, and the starcraft steppads are gone. Also i think the steering wheel isn't period to the boat. The windshield is present but taken apart and off the boat. I think its missing some kind of aluminum channel it would normally sit in but most of the additional hardware is there.
Good news is the interior floor has been pulled and from what it looks like, it was pulled 40+ years ago. There is petrified animal scat in it from what looks like the jurassic period.
Questions.
1. Where do i get the starcraft step pads. Who's the guy who plastic molded new step pads from the old. I can't find the thread?

2. WHAT was the period stern light on this boat. Was it the ever saught after jetson light? .. I'm alreaday cringing as to what this will cost in time and nerves to restore back to original. DOH .... sigh ..

3. I need pictures of these windshields and all their hardware for historical reference. Most importantly, i need to know what hardware im missing with the windshield. Pics would REALLY help guys.

4. Where do i get the factory old school splashwell grommets. The ones with the oblong screw holes on each side.

5. I need the step pad frames for this boat. Would of course love to have the pads themselves as well but i have a plan for a personal touch with the pad itself.

I have NO pics of the boat. It is sitting on a boat dolly up in the rafters of a 60+ year old outbuilding. Next week maybe.
I have to go pick the boat up, hopefully this weekend. I know you guys may ask why i bought a 2nd starcraft restoration project when i don't even have the first project boat home yet. Well when i started my search a couple months ago i was shooting for a 60's model. I bought the 1977 holiday and settled for that since 60's starcrafts are not easy to come by. When i saw this, it screamed my name and i had to have it. It's burgundy on top, egg shell on bottom and the only place the paint is missing is on the keel where most wear occurs. This restoration project scares me most because it will cost good money to get back to factory original. And parts will be HARD to come by.

Wish me luck.
Thanks

Thanks

While there are no stupid questions in life, that question NEVER crossed our minds. EVER. It makes perfect sense to us.

Why would a man restore a boat to nearly completion and then trade it for a similar but less restored boat. Why are we planning our next restoration while we are wrenching on our current love?

See the pictures in any restoration thread of a guy in a mask painting a Starcraft boat. Do you know what he's thinking? No, not angle of spary gun or how much overlap to allow. No, he's thinking "Should my next Starcraft be bigger or smaller, I/o or outboard......."

We would never ask why, EVER, you are among friends here.:D

Re: OK so i bought ANOTHER Starcraft

ok so gluvit seems to be the 'starcraft community forum' industry standard for sealing rivet leaks.

What is the standard for fiberglass epoxy resin to seal transoms and floor boards?

also whats the community standard for paint ... i see some are rolling on with rustoleum .. others are painting for real . my buddy used to paint . and has volunteered his time. i have NO IDEA nor does he about marine paint. i know to use zinc chromate as etching primer .. but what's the standard here for good ol'd fashioned boat paint.

thanks

uh, i suspect that what Starcraft originally painted it with was just enamel like rusto anyway. or am i wrong? it's a shame to learn that i wasn't painting for real during all those hours of work... :p

urethane 2-part paints last a lot longer, but have an unnatural gloss for a period vehicle...paint your '66 XKE with urethane and watch the value decrease. they're also a PITA to shoot compared to enamel (most contain polyisocyanates and thus a respirator won't protect you, you're supposed to use a pumped in air supply....read the MSDS sheet before you buy.) it's a bit easier to shoot in one way, as it resists runs a lot better than enamel thinned for spraying, IMHO.

Pettit and Interlux are the two biggest marine paint mfgrs...more info on their websites. remember to avoid copper based antifouling paints!

Due to my bad experience with Petit Easypoxy, I'd say either go with Rustoleum if you're on a budget or go for a 2 part marine paint. Don't bother with any of the middle of the road stuff.

How's that for anecdotal generalization?

Re: OK so i bought ANOTHER Starcraft

finally brought the old 1968 jet star home saturday .. she is sitting on my landscape trailer at my sisters property waiting to be worked on .. good news is i ransacked my dealers warehouse attic and i found the 3 of 5 cleats, transom handle, and starcraft steppads that belonged to the boat that someone took off 40 + years ago and put on a pile .. .

bad news is i never found the original jetsons stern light that went on it .. it's long gone unfortunately ..

In addition to the parts for my boat i found and bought few other starcraft parts other starcraft guys may be intrested in.

I won't post them here because i can't find any info on where i should post PARTS for sale .. are there rules for posting parts for sale somewhere else on these boards ? or should i just snap pics and update this thread ?

thanks

If they are Starcraft-specific used parts, and YOU aren't selling them, go ahead and start a new thread with the info. Thanks.
