I know I need another battery, but I've had to lay out alot of money for other items. I'm going to get one but it will be a couple of weeks. Can I hook trolling motor up to the starting battery along with the positive and negitive wires. Concerned about hurting the new trolling motor I just purchased when starting the boat motor.

Sorry for lack of info. The battery I have is a deep cycle dual purpose starting and trolling battery. And I was going to run 6 gauge wire 15 ft.

You should be OK to connect your trolling motor to your dual purpose battery. When you start your main motor it should draw power from your battery in a parallel circuit to your trolling motor and therefore would not affect your trollong motor.

The motor should work fine. But this sure is a recipe for getting stuck with no way of starting your main engine. The started causes a strong surge and a less than full battery is going to strain to get it going. And regardless, you are going to have rather short life on that battery with two loads like this. Bit the bullet and get another battery :) .

Amir

It will work, but remember that the engine starter requires much more power than the trolling motor and you could find your self without enough battery power to start your big engine if you use the trolling motor very much.

greg, it won't hurt the trolling motor. It's risky but you already know that. How risky? depends on how big is the outboard, how big is the T/M, how big is your boat, how hard is the wind blowing :) . It takes more juice to start a v-6 optimax than a 2-cylinder johnnyrude. I say go fishing, might be a good idea to practice pull-starting your outboard, just to be sure you can. And maybe take a paddle. ;)
