Re: OK To Run Engine Without Sterndrive??

It cost me $11 to make a hose( got it from home depot )that attaches to the thermostat housing. Hooked up the hose and ran the engine until the engine temp was 175 deg. No problem running the engine with the outdrive out. Very interesting things you have been discussing here. As far as i know, before the thermostat opens up ( to cool th engine with new water), water is diverted from the thermostat housing to the manifold and then to the elbow. Such water never even goes inside the engine. When the thermostat opens up, then fresh water is allowed to get inside the engine to cool it, then goes out to the manifold and then the elbow.

milky
water passes through the manifold and riser/ellbow at all times or it would heat up in about 10 seconds

a small amount of water allways goes through the block until it warms up then the stat allows more flow as its needed you should not be getting up to 175 its much to hot

the correct place for water to go in is the same as were the outdrive hose connects to

tommays

tommays,

You were right about the thermostat.

My engine manual shows that the water pump is the one sending raw water to the engine. If this is the case, in adding antifreeze to the engine, can I simply pour the antifreeze on the hose that "leads to" the waterpump? I assume that this process will totally disregard the thermostat, and antifreeze will circulate at all times and fill the engine block until it comes out of the elbows. Also, with this by-pass procedure, I do not have to wait anymore for the thermostat to open. Is this the easiest way to have antifreeze in the engine? Of course, opening all valves to drain any fresh water should be done beforehand.

i am a hard core drain it and store it dry and it wont be a problem guy

boat antifreeze was invented as a way to sell more antifreeze it was never nessary in the past and its why merc will not give a written way to fill and drain a motor

many people get mad at me for that so its all i will say

tommays

My merc manual recommends, in addition to draining, removal of the thermostat and pouring antifreeze. I'll do it anyway.

Anyone knows the answer to this?

"in adding antifreeze to the engine, can I simply pour the antifreeze on the hose that "leads to" the waterpump...
