Re: old boat revival

Did you clean the carbs and rebuild with all new lines and filters from the tank to the motor? If not you need to.[/QUOTE]

second that

Re: old boat revival

Well, I finished working on the boat today and I finally got somewhere.

While running the boat in a barrel, I pulled the spark plug boot off each spark plug to see if it made a difference in the way the motor ran.

It defiantly made a difference in the top and bottom cylinders. You could really hear and see the misfires. On the second cylinder there was no difference at all. After that I made sure it had spark by using the spark tester and it did.

It is obvious now that the problem is that there is no fuel getting in there. I haven?t completely cleaned out carbs. I have only sprayed them with a carb cleaner, but that is what i will do next.

I think I?m going to take it to a marine mechanic. I have never cleaned any carbs before and it looks pretty complicated. I don't want to screw up any of the springs and or linkages or timing.

If there's a carb issue then don't run the engine. As no fuel means no oil and lubrication in that cylinder, so make sure you get it fixed before running.

Carbs are pretty simple devices. You ought to read the top secret file and get a factory manual and learn (your gonna need that manual sooner or later anyway). It would put you at ease if you seen the rebuild kit, theres not much to them. I would go to a boat shop and look at the kit, I'll bet you'll say "I can do this". And you obviously had the ability to troubleshoot this far. I'm not trying to steer business away from shops, but you get alot of money in labor for a motor that's not yet proven. If you do it just get a clean area, a quart of carb cleaner ( I usually don't use the aerosol) and take your time. You can even get the camera an take pics as you go incase you forget something.

Good luck either way. And replace all the filters and hoses before you run fuel through the carbs again or you'll be back to square 1.

Re: old boat revival

I took apart the carbs today and cleaned them out.

The top and bottom carbs were not that dirty, but the bowl of the middle carb was very dirty. I cleaned that sucker out.

From reading the sticky on carb cleaning, I noticed that there is a picture of a tube with a smaller tube in the middle. These are perfectly parallel in the picture. In my carbs there is also a tube with a smaller tube in the middle. Don?t know what that is for but my small tube is not parallel with the larger diameter tube. On the top and bottom carb, the tube is pushed against the wall of the outer tube. On the middle carb, that tube was completely loose and I don?t think it?s supposed to be that way. I think it broke off. (I?m no Sherlock Holmes but I?m kind of high off the fumes of the cleaner I been using).

Anyway, what effect does that have on the engine performance with the tube off to the side?

What effect does the tube not being there have on my engine performance?

Where can I buy the copper tube assembly separately, and how do I take them off?

please help once again

Those are the pickup tubes. They must be there, and I don't think they can be replaced but I may be wrong. If those were broke when you took them apart that would explain running out of fuel and not getting full throttle.

Re: old boat revival

Does any one know were I can buy these pick up tubes? Or do I have to buy the entire top carb?

The bigger tube has a slot that looks like a flat screw driver could fit in there, are these threaded in?

Re: old boat revival

Bad news for me, the broken tube is the for idle, and without it I will never get going into the high rpm's. I need to get the entire carb body, that tube doesn't come off. I've only been to one boat shop that had old parts laying around and I could not find a comparable one.

Does anyone know of a place that could have an old 70 hp 1977 carb? Please help.

Re: old boat revival

Great Success!

I cleaned out the top and bottom carburators and completly replaced the middle carburator and she ran like a champ (in a drum at my house)! I sync'd all the butterfly valves and she also idled beautifully.

So I decieded to take her out on a trial run after work with my brother and sister and some fishing gear (I was pretty confident in her).

We get there and it was great. She starts right up, throttled her up and down, rode her a couple of miles, and then decieded to fish. Went to different fishing spots, turned her on and off several times to move, my confidence was ski hi.

We decide to call it a day because it was getting dark and she would not start. I had taken all my tools just in case something happened so I checked for sprark and that was good, checked for fuel and carbs had fuel in them. I tryed for about an hour and nothing, and night was upon us. I had to call the coast guard to pull us out. Those guys were a huge help. Took us to a boat ramp and we were on our way.

As soon as I got home I wanted to try her out. Put her in a drum and she started right up, NO PROBLEMS! WHAT THE.... Turned her on and off several times and no problems! I have no idea what happened.

Please advise.
