Old Evinrude Questions

Hello,<br /><br />I stumbled on this forum and it looks like a great place to find information. I recently obtained an old Evinrude 3HP Light Twin and had a few questions.<br /><br />The Serial number is 3022 01522 and I was wondering what year the engine was? Judging from Evinrude’s page it may be a 1957?<br /><br />I was able to start the motor a while back, but haven’t been able to get it going since. I was wondering what the proper oil/gas mixture was? <br /><br />I’m a novice with small engines, besides putting in a fresh fuel mix, changing the plugs, cleaning the carb, and checking the wiring is there anything else you can recommend to get her running smooth?<br /><br />Finally, I plan on holding onto this engine, (at least as a nostalgic back-up for my 13-foot StarCraft) but I’m wondering what it’s roughly worth, running in fair condition?<br /><br />Thanks in advance,<br /><br />Sal

It is indeed a 1957, and the fuel/oil ratio is 24:1 - What do the points look like? Maybe it just needs a new set, gap is .020.<br /><br />According to the "Old Outboard Book" a good condition Lightwin 3 is worth about $200 tops.<br /><br />-John

John,<br /><br />I plan on putting some fresh gas/oil (now that I know the right ratio) in for starters and going over all the basics with a buddy who knows a lot more about engines than I do. If we still can't get the engine purring, I'll post another message to troubleshoot things further. <br /><br />Thanks for the response, it is much appreciated.<br /><br />Sal

YOU MAY WANT TO DOUBLE CHECK THE FUEL/OIL RATIO IF I REMEMBER RIGHT THE 24:1 WAS BASED ON 30W MOTOR OIL YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SAFELY RUN ON A 50:1 MIX USING TCW3 OUTBOARD OIL JUST A TIP IN FRONT OF THE CARB BETWEEN IT AND THE AIR BOX IS A FINE MESH SCREEN DO NOT LOSE THIS IF YOU TAKE IT OFF HARD TO BELIEVE BUT THE MOTOR WILL NOT RUN WITH OUT IT AND IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DUPLICATE ONE TO REPLACE IT WITH

Sal,<br /><br />Capt. Black is right about the little screen. The mixture is 24:1 but I run mine a little thinner, about 40:1.<br /><br />You will probably need to pull the flywheel and have a good look at the points. The coils had a tendency to deteriorate over time also.<br /><br />All of those things are still available and not that expensive.<br /><br />They're sweet little motors-enjoy.

Sal, you might be interested in the website http://www.propnut.com which is devoted to the restoration of outboards of that age and older.<br /><br />I noticed they have a 1953 Evinrude Lightwin shown if you click on "Classics in the Raw". Does that one look anything like yours ?

Guys,<br /><br />Thanks so much for all the feedback. In response to 62_Kiwi, that '53 Evinrude on www.propnut.com, looks IDENTICAL to my '57, color scheme and all!<br /><br />It's been a pretty mild winter here in Massachusetts so we are hoping for an early ice-out (usually late March). Hopefully I'll have the old girl running steady by then. Like I said, the Light Twin will be a nice nostaligic back up motor at the very least. For my fishing purposes a small, reliable outboard and my Minkota electric troller are all I really need.<br /><br />Take care and thanks again,<br /><br />Sal
