Its been a few years since I've been here. I've been looking for certain parts for my 58 Evinrude 10 hp Sportwin and my 56 15 hp Johnson. I purchased the 15 horse Johnson last spring and it was my fishing motor last year. I gotta say it is a good one too. Toward the end of fall, it was a bit slow to start so I want to rebuild the carb when I put a new impellor in before I take it out on the lake this year. I found those parts no problem. I'd also like to open up the lower unit to have a close look, but I have not been able to find a seal kit for it.

The 58 Evinrude 10 horse is a motor I planned to work on a few years ago but never got around to. I'd like to rebuild the carb (haven't found the kit yet) and I'd like to pull the head, but I haven't found a head gasket for it either.

If anyone has part numbers for these kits or the head gasket, I would really appreciate it if you would post them.

By the way ... Some might be amazed at what that old 56 Johnson 15 horse can do. Last summer my wife and I met up with a couple of really large guys in a really large glass bass boat. They were stuck on a sand bar and had both their big motor .. I'd guess it was 75 to 100 horse, and their ten horse kicker, tilted up a bit and running full out, but doing nothing more than making one impressive fountain behind their stuck in the mud boat. I trolled up (we were in about a foot of water there) and offered my help, assuming they were laughing under their breath at our little 14 foot jon boat with an ancient 15 hp Johnson. Since their other option was a really long swim, they said yes to my offer. I had them toss me a rope, pull their motors out of the water, and I tied off to the the back of my boat. I trolled into deeper water which took the slack out of the rope, and told them both to move to the front of their boat. The old Johnson didn't hesitate as it pulled that big boat off of the sand bar. I don't know how long those folks were stuck, but they sure seemed anxious to get out of there once we towed them to deeper water. <g>

Thanks!

Laings Outboards, Twin City Outboards or Engine Blade and Prop will probably have what you are looking for...all are on the web, do a Google search. Nice story about the old Johnson, I have one of those too, and the next year's 18 hp as well.

i had a 55 15hp rude, best motor i ever had, i used Joe Reeves carb adjustments on it. always started by 2nd pull. super motor. Laingsoutboards.com, is my favorite for vintage parts. if you don't see it online, call Jim, he will know where to get it or has it.

You basic tune-up parts are as close as your local Johnrude dealer, or even a NAPA. Start at the dealer. The carb kit is the same one they offered for a number of years, well up into the 1970s. If not, I'll look up the Sierra part numbers for you, which will get you the NAPA parts...

There's also a cool video on Youtube of a 1956 Evinrude 15 righting a sail boat that flipped and another a "race" between a 15 Ev and an 18 Johnny. I picked up a 1956 Evinrude 15 HP last year and it is really easy to work on. I second the Laingsoutboards site. Good service and prices, or call and ask for Jeff. They just happen to be around a 1/2 hour away from me, and are good people.Rick

Re: Old Johnson and Evinrude parts

Thanks to all for the responses. I've been busy with other things or I would have thanked you all sooner. I did get a chance to look at the youtube video of the sailboat being righted ... Imagine what it took to pull that long wet sail out of the water.

Okay... I'm going to get my parts ordered. It will be sunny and in the 70s tomorrow... I have the trailer tags renewed and the hitch on the van, but I won't run the old motor until I've got it ready for the season, so the fish will have to wait. Darn the bad luck!
