Old Johnson wont go!

I pulled the cover off and there was nothing there. Is this right? There is a shaft sticking out of the exhaust housing, That I can turn by hand and it turns the prop. What could the problem be? The motor is a 1973 Johnson 25HP. Should that shaft go into something?

Thanks to some of the fine folks on this board that e-mailed me, I have figured out the problem. The powerhead is gone. That is why it will not run. This could be a problem since fishing season really starts in a month.

No no Nathan, ya got it all wrong. Being a "newbie" to the site I hope to offer the best advice around whenever I can. It has absolutely nothing to do with the powerhead. Its just a loose nut, the one that pulled the cover! I take it its boring in your part of the world?
