Was out this morning fishing, wind was calm, lake was flat and was just really enjoying the morning. Right after 9am when the no wake rule lifts there were these to small boats that came out and started flying around the lake. Really paid no attention to them as they were staying to the other end. After about an hour they made their way down to were I was and was able to get a good look.

These two boats looked like old 1950s early 60s wood racers about 10' to 12' long. One had the old green Merc on it and the other had what looked like a 1950s red Merc. I stopped fishing and just sat and watched these two for about a half an hour. Was quite fun and reminded me of my youth and watching the racers on the river. Those races are something these kids now-a-days will never see! The new racers just don't seem the same.

Re: Old memories

I LOVE those boats (and the larger wooden Chris Craft type too). I would NEVER own one (not my style or usage) but you have to admit....They are pretty.

Re: Old memories

Were they the little flat hydroplanes you can make in your garage!?! We ran those all over the lake when I was a kid. I'm trying to get my kid amped to build one in a year or two.

If it was one of the REAL wood raceboats, then that's a whole different league - beautiful.

Re: Old memories

One looked moore like a runabout and the other was what looked to be about 10', narrow, single cockpit and the driver kneeled amidship.
When I was a kid a neighbor across the street had one just like it and raced semi-professionally. Had a Keikhoffer racing outboard on it that was direct drive. They used to put it up on stands to start it then push it off the stands. For a little boat that thing would fly. Just can't imagine going that fast kneeling and being that close to the water!
