Hi Paul
Your Motor is a 1950-51 Johnson 2 Cyl. 5 HP. Don't know about the side cover. Maybe others will!

Re: OLD OUTBORD ENGINE

Hi Festus
Yes these models came with a bottom half shroud. The TN series motors were made from 1941 to 1953. They are very comman. Many are still in use. If yours runs good, or you can make it run with a little cleaning and service, then yes you have a dandy find. I don't know what happened to all of the shrouds. It seems to me that 65-75% are missing. I'm guessing that there is at least one shroud (if not a whole TN motor)in the bottom of every lake in america. I find very few of these motors that won't run real good with a little TLC.

Hey Festus,

I have a tn-28. Motors are about the same, except yours doesn't have clutch. I am real familier with the series. If I can help, please feel free to email me. My email address is aholling@onemain.com

All TN-Series motors have the neutral clutch. The similar TD-series motors don't have the neutral clutch. All are 5hp and are solid runners.
- Scott

Re: OLD OUTBORD ENGINE

Festus,
Don't know how old you are, but if you've ever turned a car/truck with points ignition then you know what's under the flywheel. Auto parts stores sell harmonic balancer pullers for about $12 that adapt to many, many flywheels. It probably just has dirty points that need cleaning and regapping. Worst case scenario is it needs coils/point/condensors...but that is only about a $50 ordeal. Worth the investment for a solid runner, though. Cowls, covers show up quite often on ebay...go to ebay motors, then parts/accessories, then boats/watercraft, then motors and parts. Good luck.

Re: OLD OUTBORD ENGINE

Hi festus
Once again I got cought being lazy. Chinewalker is correct. The TD's 1941-49 The TN's 1950-53. And all TN models have the clutch feature. Your model still used what I call the old style ignition parts. You want to be careful with these parts, points can be spendy. There is a bakelite stick that rubs a cam on the crankshaft. Each set of points has one. These sticks become sticky and do not allow the points to funtion. Carefully remove the points and clean the sticks and contacts. Reset points to .020. This should take care of your spark problem. There should be no need for a flywheel puller. Just loosen the flywheel nut and it should pull itself. Take your time don't damage the bakelite sticks(sometimes they can really be frozen. The last time I checked NOS points were about $90. I can get more motors than I want free.
